Buzzfeed offers flimsy ‘proof’ Trump supported Iraq war; GOP frontrunner says try again

Left-leaning BuzzFeed thought they’d caught Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump in a lie, but it turned out to be wishy-washy at best.

Trump has steadfastly maintained that he was against the invasion of Iraq from the very start. But Buzzfeed found an interview from the early 2000s in which the real estate developer offers lukewarm support to shock radio host Howard Stern.

The two discuss Manhattan real estate before Stern brings up at about the 1:35 mark the 9/11 attack that took down the World Trade Center Twin Towers.

Then, at about the 3:40 mark, Stern segues into asking Trump whether he’s in favor of invading Iraq.

“Yeah, I guess so,” he hedged.

That interview took place on the first anniversary of 9/11 — September 11, 2002. The war wouldn’t begin for another six months. Coalition forces invaded Iraq on March 20, 2003.

Trump reiterated to “Good Morning America” co-host George Stephanopoulos Friday that he never supported the Iraq War.

When asked whether he wanted to stop making that claim given the Stern interview, Trump doubled down.

“No, that was long before the war began and by the time the war began I was saying, and I’m on record as saying that we shouldn’t go in,” Trump replied.

“But you’re not on record at all opposing the war before it began,” the ABC host replied. “There’s simply no evidence of that, sir.”

Trump responded that the evidence was out there and he would find it.

The real estate mogul has flip-flopped on a number of issues, from abortion to the Second Amendment, and most recently, federal funding of Planned Parenthood.

But if critics are going to hang their hat on a “Yeah, I guess so” as proof that he once supported the Iraq War, they’re going to have a long, uphill battle ahead of them.
