AZ Family Dollar worker hit with murder rap after unloading gun on shoplifter who punched him

Twitter is up in arms following news that a 24-year-old employee of an Arizona Family Dollar store is behind bars on a murder charge after he allegedly shot a shoplifter who punched him in the face at least ten times.

Phoenix police responded to the Family Dollar store on Wednesday and found the suspected serial shoplifter, who had been shot multiple times, outside. The man was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, according to Arizona’s Family.

Kevin Salas Madrid, the employee who allegedly shot him, was found with his empty gun at his side.

Madrid told the police that he confronted the man after seeing him enter the store and told him to get out. A witness said he overheard Madrid and the would-be shoplifter arguing, before the man hit Madrid with a closed fist, knocking his eyeglasses from the employee’s face.

Madrid then allegedly pulled out a gun and began shooting. He fired off at least ten rounds, continuing to shoot even after the man dropped to the ground. After he was down, Madrid allegedly walked closer to the man and continued firing until his gun was empty.

A fellow employee of the store put the number of shots fired at 15, claiming that Madrid said that he couldn’t control his anger.

Madrid himself reportedly admitted to police that he didn’t see any weapons on the suspected shoplifter and called his shooting of the man “egregious.”

“Kevin stated he had made the worst decision of his life,” police wrote in his probable cause statement, according to Fox 10 Phoenix. “Kevin explained he was struck and decided to shoot but looking back, he realized it was egregious.”

Madrid was arrested and faces a second-degree murder charge, indicating that the man did not survive his injuries.

Family Dollars across the nation have seen their share of deadly shootings in recent years.

In a strikingly similar incident, Antonio Batres, a 21-year-old employee of a Houston Family Dollar was charged with murder in April 2022 after he allegedly emptied his Gock 9mm into shoplifter Troy Odom.

The incident was captured on video.

Two employees confronted Odom, the Daily Mail reported at the time, and followed him outside.

Upon further investigation, the Houston Police Department “determined the victim had his back toward Batres, who then pulled out a pistol and shot the victim several times.”

In October 2022, it was an Escalon, Calif., Family Dollar employee who was shot multiple times.

On Twitter, Madrid’s charge of second-degree murder has sparked outrage.

“Sorry this was self defense. Period,” stated one user. “Dead guy hit him first. F**k the angry black man bulls**t. NO ONE HAS A RIGHT TO HIT ANOTHER.”

“B.S. this was a threat to this employee,” tweeted another. “One less POS out there to hurt or kill someone!”

“Hard working Americans are having their lives destroyed by Soros DAs who refuse to punish criminals!” fumed a third. “They’re having to take the law in their own hands to protect themselves from these animals! No protection law enforcement! Innocent get punished!”
