Media is planning a coordinated Trump attack that has ‘backfire’ written all over it

Liberal newspapers across the nation are about to hand President Donald Trump a gift.

More than 300 newspapers have committed to a “Boston Globe-coordinated effort” to run editorials on Thursday purportedly to promote the freedom of the press.

But since the motivation behind the plan is to take a stand against the ‘‘dirty war against the free press” brought on, according to the publication, by Trump’s “frequent attacks on the media,” the stunt can only backfire as the president’s criticisms of a biased liberal media are proven.

‘‘We are not the enemy of the people,’’ Marjorie Pritchard, deputy managing editor of the Globe’s opinion page, told the AP last week.

The New York Times, The Dallas Morning News, The Denver Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Chicago Sun-Times are joining hundreds of other publications in the initiative which has been promoted by industry groups like the American Society of News Editors.

The president was ready with a response, rebuking the Globe for being in “collusion” with the other newspapers.

A few minutes after his Thursday morning tweet, Trump followed with another about the “true freedom of the press.”

Politico’s Jack Shafer believes the press “just played right onto Trump’s hands” and the effort “is sure to backfire.”

“It will provide Trump with circumstantial evidence of the existence of a national press cabal that has been convened solely to oppose him,” Shafer wrote. “When the editorials roll off the press on Thursday, all singing from the same script, Trump will reap enough fresh material to [wail] on the media for at least a month.”

The Globe’s “anti-Trump project is also an exercise in redundancy, not to mention self-stroking,” Shafer argued, adding that the “call for a collective reprimand” in light of all the existing editorials and columns slamming the president just make the Globe’s stunt “all the more pointless.”

“Editorial pages of America, don’t unite! Think for yourselves! Reject this stupid pro-press assignment!” Shafer concluded.

Americans seemed to agree as Twitter users were not impressed with the chest-pounding from the leftist circle of the smug, anti-Trump press.
