A possible terrorist shot and killed two police officers and nearby civilian in Liege, Belgium Tuesday before being “neutralized” by authorities during a hostage situation at a local high school.

The man, wielding a knife, approached two police officers from behind, stabbed them multiple times, and then disarmed them. The suspect then proceeded to shoot and kill both police officers, as well as a 22-year-old civilian driver nearby, according to the Associated Press.

The shooter moved into a local high school, where he took a cleaning lady hostage. He was shot and killed during a standoff with authorities. While the man’s motive is unclear, he was reportedly heard shouting “Allahu Akbar,” BBC reported. Belgian prosecutors revealed that there are “indications” that the incident was a terrorist attack.

“There are elements that point in the direction that this is a terrorist act,” Eric Van Der Sypt, spokesman for the Belgian federal prosecutors office, told AFP, a prominent French outlet.

The suspect was, according to Belgian broadcaster RTBF, released from prison Monday. While he had no apparent ties to extremism, reports said that it is possible he was radicalized in jail.

Belgium has been hist by a string of terrorist attacks in recent years, including twin suicide bombings in 2016 that left 32 people dead.
