President Donald Trump doubled-down on blaming Democrats for the government shutdown Sunday morning, warning Senate Democrats that Republicans could move forward with a “nuclear option” if they continue to balk on a short-term spending bill.
“Great to see how hard Republicans are fighting for our Military and Safety at the Border. The Dems just want illegal immigrants to pour into our nation unchecked. If stalemate continues, Republicans should go to 51% (Nuclear Option) and vote on real, long term budget, no C.R.’s,” Trump tweeted Sunday morning.

House Republicans managed to psuh a bill through the chamber Thursday evening that would keep the government funded through mid-February. The bill also reauthorizes a highly popular program that provides comprehensive health insurance for more than 8.9 million American children. Democrats have asked for the reauthorization of the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) since the program’s budget expired in November.
Senate Democrats shot the House bill down Friday evening, choosing to shutdown the government to try and secure legal protections for 800,000 illegal immigrants and members of their families.
Trump called out Senate Democrats Saturday morning for voting against the measure to fund the government Friday evening.
“Democrats are holding our Military hostage over their desire to have unchecked illegal immigration. Can’t let that happen,” Trump tweeted Saturday.
