Middle school asks kids to define ‘boytoy,’ ‘mistress’ on quiz

A Hopewell, Va., middle school faced outrage from parents last week when it was revealed students were asked to define terms like “boytoy” and “affair.”

The Carter G. Woodson Middle School quiz asked students questions like “What do you call it when a married person has a relationship with someone else,” “What do you call a married man’s girlfriend?” and “What do you call the much younger boyfriend of an older woman?” WSET reported Monday.

The rest of the quiz was innocuous, and asked students to define “cousin,” “uncle” and other family terms.

The teacher apparently downloaded the quiz from the internet and handed it out as part of the Family and Consumer Sciences class, the superintendent of the Hopewell City Public Schools said in a statement. The quiz was not part of the approved curriculum and had not been run by the proper channels, the superintendent added.

“This assignment was also not included or referenced in the teacher’s weekly lesson plans that are reviewed and approved in advance of instruction. Additional controls and School Board Office supports have been put in place. At this point, this matter has become a personnel issue and no further comment is appropriate,” the superintendent added.

Other schools have been forced to apologize after teachers have assigned inappropriate or unapproved work to their students. Another Virginia school district issued an apology after a teacher handed out a quiz asking students their opinions on abortion and gay people serving in the military.
