The Texas shooter was previously convicted for cracking the skull of his infant son years ago, according to a New York Times report.

Devin Patrick Kelley, the gunman who opened fire in a church Sunday, faced assault charges in 2012 in relation to assaulting his wife and his young stepson, TheNYT reported Monday. The Air Force maintained that Kelley admitted to doing it while he was located at New Mexico’s Holloman Air Force Base.

“He assaulted his stepson severely enough that he fractured his skull and he also assaulted his wife. He pled to intentionally doing it,” Don Christensen, who served as chief prosecutor in the Air Force case, told TheNYT. Kelley was served with a sentence of 12 months in confinement, and he went down to the lowest possible rank.

Kelley opened fire in a small church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, killing 26 people and wounding other congregants. Authorities still remain uncertain regarding the motive of the shooting, but believe that it had to do with a domestic dispute.

“This was not racially motivated, it wasn’t over religious beliefs,” Freeman Martin of the Texas Department of Public Safety said Monday. “There was a domestic situation going on within the family and the in-laws.”
