Cain called on “house negroes” to stand up in support of Carson after a Michigan Chronicle op-ed accused Carson of being a “house negro” following Carson’s defensive of President Donald Trump’s remarks on the Charlottesville riots.

“If being called a ‘house Negro’ is what some of us must endure for succeeding in this nation and thinking for ourselves, then let all of the “house Negroes” stand up and be counted,” Cain wrote in his letter. “Wow! There are too many to count, but there’s Dr. Ben Carson standing tall among millions, and doing something great again.”

“House negro” is commonly used as a slur against black people who are seen as too subservient to white people. Cain went on to praise Carson for choosing to sacrifice his time to take the HUD position so he could bring new ideas to help the black community.

“Secondly, Dr. Carson didn’t become a world-renowned brain surgeon by being a ‘house Negro.’ He achieved this distinction because of his intellect and the results he produced in his profession,” Cain wrote. “Dr. Carson had plenty of other better paying and less stressful opportunities to choose from before he accepted the HUD position, but he chose to serve his country and a president who is truly trying to create a better America.”

Cain ran as the Republican presidential candidate for the 2012 election, but ended his campaign after a sexual harassment allegations. Two women came forward to allege Cain spoke inappropriately to them.
