O’Reilly buckles fast! Needless Maxine Waters apology wasn’t enough … grovelling continues

Fox News host Bill O’Reilly did something Tuesday that he normally avoids — he groveled.

He apologized for cracking a joke directed at Rep. Maxine Waters — a joke that wasn’t sexist, wasn’t racist, wasn’t any kind of “ist.” It was just a joke.

After likening the California Democrat’s hair to a “James Brown wig” during a “Fox & Friends” appearance Tuesday morning, liberals went ballistic and called for O’Reilly’s head.

He immediately issued an apology for the harmless joke.

“As I have said many times, I respect Congresswoman Maxine Waters for being sincere in her beliefs. I said that today on ‘Fox and Friends’ calling her ‘old school.’ Unfortunately, I also made a jest about her hair, which was dumb. I apologize,” O’Reilly said in the statement.

When the apology seemed to increase the rage directed against him, he doubled down on it that evening during his opening “Talking Points” segment.

“I made that mistake of marginalizing someone speaking their mind this morning on ‘Fox & Friends.’ I said in simple jest that the congresswoman’s hair distracted me,” O’Reilly said. “Well, that was stupid. I apologize.”

He continued that “It’s not necessary to poke fun at anyone who’s speaking from the heart,” and added, “that it is necessary to analyze what’s being said” by Waters.

He then continued on his critique of Waters while avoiding any commentary on her hair.

While O’Reilly’s apology appeared to be a surrender to mob rule, it could also be argued that he lost gravitas with his offhand quip, and relegated his real arguments against the congresswoman onto the back burner.

If there were an apology necessary, it should have perhaps been directed to the estate of the late singer James Brown, the Godfather of Soul.

That’s who really deserved an apology.

As for Waters, she implied that she was too classy to respond. If so, it would have been a first for the liberal congresswoman who’s made it her personal crusade to impeach President Donald Trump.
