Trump declares national day of patriotism

President Donald Trump will create a national day of patriotism, according to the White House press secretary.

Shortly after taking office as the 45th U.S. president, Trump signed a series of documents on the Senate floor establishing his new administration, reports the Associated Press.

Among the president’s first acts was signing a proclamation for a national day of patriotism, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer revealed on Twitter.

Spicer did not introduce any details regarding the new day for the celebration of America, such as the specific significance or the date. Trump has repeatedly emphasized the need to “make America great again.”

It is currently unclear how this day will differ from existing patriotic days, like Independence Day.

The president reserves the right to declare one-time holidays, but only Congress has the authority to create federal holidays. Former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama used this power to declare Sept. 11 Patriot’s Day.

By way of a presidential proclamation, Bush established Patriot’s Day in 2002, and Obama did the same in 2014.

Sept. 11 was first declared a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the Terrorist Attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
