The landmark Hollywood sign in Los Angeles was vandalized in the early morning hours of New Years to read “Hollyweed.”
California voters approved Proposition 64 on Election Day, making recreational marijuana use legal for citizens over the age of 21. While California already legalized marijuana for medical purposes over two decades ago, the push for recreational approval has been a long time in the making. In celebration of the recent vote, vandals changed the sign to show their excitement, the New York Post reports.
Footage caught on surveillance cameras shows one person, dressed entirely in black, approaching the famous sign at 3 a.m. on New Years Day. The person in question spent approximately an hour and a half changing the O letters to E letters using white tarps. Authorities are currently reviewing the footage to ascertain the vandal’s identity, but have made no arrests.
“We can’t even tell if it’s a male or a female,” Sgt. Robert Payan of the LAPD Security Services office told reporters.
Local news affiliates tweeted out photos of the sign early Sunday morning:

Well-known marijuana users and advocates for legalization Tommy Chong and Snoop Dogg also took to Twitter to spread the news:

This is not, however, the first time someone changed the sign to Hollyweed. On January 1, 1976, the sign also read Hollyweed.
