Why Trump’s Dr. Oz appearance could actually be a brilliant move

Republican nominee Donald Trump will reveal more details about his health on “The Dr. Oz Show” this week, in a decision that seems odd given the show’s lack of credibility.

Oz has been widely criticized for the dubious scientific claims he makes, but the show is nevertheless quite popular, especially among women. It could actually prove to be a brilliant move, because women are a key demographic Trump is struggling with.

News of the decision broke just ahead of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s collapse at a 9/11 memorial service Sunday morning. Her campaign eventually disclosed she was diagnosed with pneumonia Friday, drawing the issue of her health right back into the campaign spotlight.

The Republican nominee declared health is now an “issue” of the 2016 campaign, and said on Fox News Monday he’ll be releasing “very, very specific” details from a recent physical. He’ll appear on Dr. Oz’s show Thursday.

Fellow doctors have labeled Oz a quack, and he’s been criticized for putting profit ahead of scientific veracity on the show. He’s also been the target of several media outlets. Yet, he’s also known as America’s “most trusted doctor,” and has enjoyed high ratings, scoring the top spot among women ages 25 to 54 between 9 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. in 2013.

That’s a key demographic for Trump, who is struggling to win the support of women. Clinton opened up a wide lead with women over Trump in a recent ABC News/Washington Post national poll, scoring a whopping 58 percent of support to his 35 percent, and maintaining a 19-point lead among college-educated women.
