FBI mistakenly gives 27 ’embarrassing’ Hillary Clinton emails to Congress, now asks for them back

DC-NEWS 300X71By Kathryn Watson, DCNF

FBI officials have asked House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform (HOGR) members to return 27 emails they gave the committee in a document dump from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s investigative file.

The FBI asked HOGR Chairman and Utah Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz’ committee to return the emails after including them in an Aug. 17 document dump that was supposed to be identical to an Aug. 16 document — but wasn’t, according to Chaffetz.

“The problem is the second set had 27 emails more than the other one, which we were grateful for … only to have the FBI try to come back and recover those,” Chaffetz said in a Monday hearing with intelligence community officials over classifications and redactions from the FBI investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server at the Department of State.

“Not because it was SAP (Special Access Programs) material — because it was embarrassing. That’s why. It was embarrassing. But we should have had it in the first round,” Chaffetz said.

Chaffetz issued a subpoena for the entire FBI file in the middle of the hearing.

Chaffetz and other Republicans on the committee hammered the FBI for failing to hand over its entire investigative file on Clinton.

“That’s the way a banana republic acts,” Chaffetz said. “That’s not the way the United States of America acts.”

FBI Director James Comey testified before HOGR on July 7, two days after announcing he would not recommend pursuing criminal charges against Clinton. Chaffetz promised HOGR members “whatever” records the FBI can give under law and policy. But so far, Republicans haven’t found the FBI’s information satisfactory.
