Following GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump’s praise of House Speaker Paul Ryan’s primary opponent, the Wisconsin Republican confirmed he never sought the billionaire’s help in retaining his seat.
Trump told The Washington Post he refused to endorse Ryan or Arizona Sen. John McCain in their re-election bids.
“Neither Speaker Ryan nor anyone on his team has ever asked for Donald Trump’s endorsement. And we are confident in a victory next week regardless,” Zack Roday, a Ryan campaign spokesman, said in a statement.

Trump thanked Ryan’s primary opponent, Paul Nehlen, Tuesday via Twitter, following Nehlen’s defense of the candidate’s proposal to implement a temporary ban on Muslims entering the country.
Thanks to @pnehlen for your kind words, very much appreciated.

After some initial hesitation, Ryan endorsed Trump in June after numerous policy discussions.
The latest results posted by Real Clear Politics show Nehlan trailing Ryan by 73 points in the race for Wisconsin’s 1st District.
