While DC hides, Old Guard faces down storm at Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

By Katie Frates DC-NEWS 300X71

The Army’s Old Guard remains at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Friday, staring into the face of winter storm Jonas while the rest of the region takes shelter.

The duty to guard the tomb falls to the Sentinels — a volunteer position — with an acceptance rate of 20 percent. In times of extreme inclement weather, they can take refuge in a duty hut called the “trophy room” overlooking the tomb — but we bet they’ll remain on the march.

A dusting of snow Wednesday evening shut down much of D.C., leading to hours-long commutes home that reached into the double-digits. Friday’s storm is expected to bring two feet of snow to the district, which has had a very mild winter until now.

The Sentinels have continuously guarded the tomb since 1948.
