Pro baseball team forfeits game over players’ Pride Night mutiny

A Pennsylvania minor league pro baseball team forfeited its Pride Night game after a number of players refused to take the field in the special rainbow colored jerseys.

The York Revolution’s scheduled Thursday contest against Southern Maryland was called off after the mutineers refused to take the loss to their personal dignity by allowing themselves to be used to promote a political message and an endorsement of homosexuality.

Disappointed fans were informed of the Atlantic League team’s decision on Wednesday when it announced “with great disappointment” that the game wouldn’t take place, but there would still be a Pride Night celebration at WellSpan Park as a free admission event.

“This decision was not reached lightly. Unfortunately, several of our players have refused to wear the scheduled Pride Night jersey and the club decided that hosting the event is more important than forcing players to wear jerseys they are not comfortable with and playing the game,” the team said in a statement, throwing its own players under the bus.

“As a result, and out of respect for the Pride Community and the York community as a whole, the York Revolution has decided that the game on Thursday, June 18 will be forfeited and that Pride Night will continue on as the feature element of the evening at WellSpan Park,” the statement continued.

“To be clear; this action by the players is completely inconsistent with our vision as the Most Welcoming Place in York. As a small token of our regret for the last-minute change of plans and support for our LGBTQIA+ representing partners we are making a $10,000 donation to the Rainbow Rose Center to support and further their work in making sure the York community is as inclusive as we strive to make WellSpan Park in York, Pennsylvania,” the team said.

The league acknowledged the team’s forfeit in its own statement.

“For more than a decade, this event has represented far more than a baseball game,” the Rainbow Rose Center said in a statement. “It has been a celebration of visibility, belonging, and community. It has brought together thousands of people from across our region and raised critical funds that support the Rainbow Rose Center’s work serving LGBTQIA+ youth, adults, families, and allies throughout York County.”

“The York Revolution chose to prioritize the continuation of Pride Night, ensuring that LGBTQIA+ community members and supporters still have a space to gather, celebrate and be seen,” the center stated. “For that, we are grateful,” the center said.

The York players’ revolution comes amid an uproar over players for the MLB San Francisco Giants displaying Bible verses on their caps alongside the team’s special Pride Night logo, triggering the thin-skinned bullies of the powerful LGBTQ+ lobby and its allies who whined that the introduction of real religion into their pagan ceremony spoiled the fun.

“Everyone’s tickets for the game on Thursday will be treated as a rainout that can be redeemed for any future game,” the team said.
