Appeals court temporarily blocks Trump from paying Carroll judgment

President Donald Trump’s $83.3 defamation judgment has been put on ice until SCOTUS can weigh in.

After having his presidential immunity defense rejected by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit, Trump is heading to the Supreme Court of the United States for a final decision. E. Jean Carroll did not object to the delay in payment so long as the bond amount would be increased by $7.5 million to account for interest accrued, should he be unsuccessful in getting the court to toss the verdicts. The appeals court found these terms acceptable, according to a court brief on Monday.

“Appellant [Trump] moves for a stay of the Court’s mandate pending filing and disposition of a petition for a writ of certiorari in the Supreme Court. Appellee does not oppose the motion on the condition that Appellant increase the bond by $7,462,492.74 to account for the post-judgment interest that would accrue during any proceedings before the Supreme Court through October 2027,” the order reads.

“IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that Appellant’s motion to stay the mandate is GRANTED, subject to the condition that the Appellant increase the bond posted by $7,462,492.74 to account for the post-judgment interest that would accrue during any proceedings before the Supreme Court through October 2027. Appellant must increase the bond within 21 days of the date of this order, with notice to be provided to the Court within five calendar days of that happening,” it continues.
