A new survey reveals that Americans’ perception of former President Donald Trump calling into question the 2020 election results has been steadily shifting.
Many still buy the leftist lie that Trump threatened democracy itself with his action or inaction on January 6, 2021, and his efforts to contest the election results in some states. However, the gap between those who continue to find him guilty and those who believe he had every right to question the outcome has narrowed according to a new poll.
The nationwide New York Times/Siena College poll has asked registered voters since at least 2022 about their beliefs with the same question regarding Trump and the election results.
“What comes closer to your view about Donald Trump’s actions after the 2020 election?” the poll asked.
While 49% of those surveyed said they believe he “went so far that he threatened American democracy,” 46% responded that Trump was“exercising his right to contest the election.”
The number is significant in that the same question asked in July 2022, found that only 39% of voters believed Trump was exercising his right, and 55% saw him as threatening democracy.
There was a significant shift in the number of people who responded that they didn’t know or refused to answer, from 7% in July 2022 to just 4% in the latest survey.
The poll shows a steady shift in the number over the two years of surveys, with more voters seeming to support Trump’s right to contest the election results, as many Democrats have repeatedly done after GOP victories.
The nationwide poll was conducted by phone with 2,516 voters from Oct. 20 to 23, 2024. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 2.2 percentage points.
