Among the nine 2024 “Travelers of the Year” named by National Geographic is drag queen Pattie Gonia.

“As founder of the nonprofit Outdoorist Oath, she brings the queer community together in the parks and wild spaces of Oregon, her home state,” National Geographic continued. “Her feel-good music videos address environmental justice and pride in identity, and include collaborators such as cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Indigenous trans musician Quinn Christopherson.”

The drag queen’s self-proclaimed “style” was described as “Campy, witty, sustainable, and unapologetic. A lady in the streets but a freak on the peaks.”

“Pattie Gonia is more than a drag queen,” announced one publication, adding, “she’s an environmentalist who is introducing the magic of nature to a new generation.”

“Pattie Gonia fearlessly pursues intersectional activism in her advocacy. For years, she has been creating a space for LBGTQ+ youth in the great outdoors and engaging in environmentalism with humor and joy,” the Good Good Good article explained.

National Geographic’s decision to include a drag queen in its top list of travelers disturbed plenty of social media users who let their opinions be known on X.

When I was twelve (1987), I asked my parents for a subscription to Nat Geo. Back then, it was a beautiful publication that transported me to places in world I dreamed of going to. Now, it’s a portal to a living nightmare and makes me want to stay home and close the blinds.

Demeaning & gross. This man is an insult to women, to travelers, & to our intrepid ancestors who overcame insurmountable odds through the ages as they navigated the earth. National Geographic used to honor true exploration. They discredited themselves years ago.
