The homeless crisis in California that was arguably brought on by left-wing policies shows no signs of abating anytime soon.
Violence is a common side effect of streets filled with drug addicts and the mentally ill and a Santa Monica city councilmember got a firsthand reminder when he was attacked over the weekend by a homeless man.
Councilmember Phil Brock and his girlfriend were walking at a popular shopping district in Santa Monica when they encountered Sawyer Walden Allee, ripping signs off storefronts, KTLA reported.
“I saw a gentleman on the 1300 block of the promenade tearing signs off a storefront,” Brock told the outlet. “He was throwing them on the ground. As I walked by, I said, ‘Hey, can you put those in the trash can?’”
The elected official said he began cleaning up the mess himself and that’s when Allee approached him and began shouting obscenities. Brock said the suspect also threw an unidentified liquid on him and his girlfriend.
“I turned to walk away. He took a bottle of some sort of liquid and threw it on me,” Brock said. “Made a second throw and doused Kathryn [his girlfriend] as well. We called 911.”
Allee, who is facing a felony charge of robbery, was arrested and reportedly held for a mental evaluation. This is his third arrest in two-and-a-half weeks, according to KTLA — he had been released twice from Los Angeles County jail on felony charges in the days leading up to the incident involving Brock.
Brock said the city is dealing with up to 1,000 homeless people on their streets every day and appealed for more help at the federal, state and county levels to deal with the “impossible” burden.
His reasoning and the rhetoric he used while speaking with KTTV may explain why the problem exists in the first place.
“There must be compassion towards our business owners and toward our residents,” Brock said. “I think this all interchanges. It can’t be [that] we’re just gonna help the people who are unhoused because I also have people who are hearing and feeling those disturbances at their apartments, at their houses, at their business in the city.”
