Trump unloads on ‘deranged lunatic’ Jack Smith over 37-count indictment

Former President Donald Trump lashed out at Special Counsel Jack Smith, calling him a “deranged lunatic” after he practically did a Snoopy dance as he unsealed a 37-count indictment against Trump over national security issues and obstruction of justice in connection to his handling of classified documents.

Trump released a video defending himself against the charges. He also posted a picture of Smith on Truth Social, accusing the prosecutor of being behind the Internal Revenue Service and Lois Lerner going after conservative groups in 2013.

“This is the man who caused the Lois Lerner catastrophe with the IRS. He went after Evangelicals and Great Americans of Faith. The United States had to apologize, and pay major damages for what this deranged lunatic did. He had a unanimous loss in the Supreme Court. His wife is a Trump Hater, just as he is a Trump Hater—a deranged ‘psycho’ that shouldn’t be involved in any case having to do with ‘Justice,’ other than to look at Biden as a criminal, which he is!” Trump railed on the social media platform.

Lerner was the director of the Exempt Organizations Unit of the Internal Revenue Service and was smack dab in the middle of the scandal involving the Tea Party at the time. Republicans voted to hold her in contempt of Congress for insufficient testimony on the issue in 2014.

The former president claims he is not guilty and this is a witch hunt as Republicans hotly defend him. Trump’s aide Walt Nauta, a former US Navy noncommissioned officer who left government service to work for him after his term ended in January 2021, was also indicted on six obstruction and concealment-related charges, according to Fox News.

Smith, who was appointed by US Attorney General Merrick Garland as an independent investigator with the US Department of Justice, preened before cameras on Friday alluding to the so-called “gravity” of Trump’s alleged crimes in his 49-page, 37-count indictment. No such charges have been levied against President Biden who had documents found in numerous, much less secure, locations than Mar-a-Lago.

According to the indictment, the 37 charges against Trump and Nauta include willful retention of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice, withholding a document or record, corruptly concealing a document or record, concealing a document in a federal investigation, a scheme to conceal, and false statements and representations.

The first 31 counts of the indictment involve Trump’s alleged willful retention of national defense information at Mar-a-Lago. The indictment asserts that Trump kept the classified documents from seven separate agencies after leaving the White House.

The agencies include the Central Intelligence Agency, the Department of Defense, the National Security Agency, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, the National Reconnaissance Office, the Department of Energy, the Department of State, and the Bureau of Intelligence and Research.

“Today an indictment was unsealed, charging Donald J. Trump with felony violations of our national security laws as well as participating in a conspiracy to obstruct justice,” Smith announced.

He stressed that laws intended to “protect national defense information are critical to the safety and security of the United States. And they must be enforced.”

“Violations of those laws put our country at risk. Adherence to the rule of law is a bedrock principle of the Department of Justice and our nation’s commitment to the rule of law sets an example for the world,” he added. “We have one set of laws in this country and they apply to everyone applying those laws.”

Trump will surrender, face arrest, and be formally charged in US District Court in Miami possibly next week. Under maximum federal sentences, if convicted, he could face decades in prison. It is unlikely that Trump will be arrested, but it is possible.

“It’s very important for me to note that the defendants, in this case, must be presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law,” Smith claimed. “To that end, my office will seek a speedy trial on this matter consistent with the public interest and the rights of the accused.”
