‘I will fight you’: Trump warns Texas not to impeach AG Ken Paxton, GOP-led House does anyway

Former President Donald Trump put the RINOs of Texas on notice ahead of the next election as they unflinchingly proceeded to impeach Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Following an impeachment resolution filed by the House General Investigations Committee Thursday, Texas state representatives were given 48 hours to deliberate and vote on the impeachment of Paxton without access to evidence or witnesses. Saturday, just prior to the House convening to hear arguments, Trump warned against proceeding, “I will fight you if it does.”

Taking to Truth Social, the president called out Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan who, despite a supermajority, has continued to suppress the conservative agenda voters sent their representatives to Austin to manage.

“The RINO Speaker of the House of Texas, Dade Phelan, who is barely a Republican at all and failed the test on voter integrity, wants to impeach one of the most hard working and effective Attorney Generals in the United States, Ken Paxton, who just won re-election with a large number of American Patriots strongly voting for him,” Trump wrote. “You would think that any issue would have been fully adjudicated by the voters of Texas, especially when that vote was so conclusive…”

In fact, as previously reported, the leading argument from opposition to the resolution was Texas Government Code 665.081, “An officer in this state may not be removed from office for an act the officer may have committed before the officer’s election to office.”

Paxton had been accused in Oct. 2020 of bribery and abuse of office after allegedly helping a real estate developer and donor with a legal dispute, a detail that the AG’s opponents had run on when he sought and won reelection in 2022.

Trump continued, “I love Texas, won it twice in landslides, and watched as many other friends, including Ken Paxton, came along with me. Hopefully, Republicans in the Texas House will agree that this is a very unfair process that should not be allowed to happen or proceed–I will fight you if it does. It is the Radical Left Democrats, RINOS, and Criminals that never stop. ELECTION INTERFERENCE! Free Ken Paxton, let them wait for the next election!”

The implied threat of facing primary challenges with the oft-sought after endorsement of the president did little to deter the vast majority of House Republicans as 60 joined 61 Democrats in voting 121-23 in favor of the resolution to impeach Paxton.

The AG will now be forced to step aside as First Assistant Attorney General Brent Webster stands in to fill his role until a Senate trial is conducted to determine if Paxton will be permanently removed by two-thirds majority vote.

With suspicions and allegations of election interference still a lingering concern for voters heading into the 2024 presidential cycle, many perceived Phelan’s move as a gift to President Joe Biden. Following the 2020 election, Paxton had played a significant role in standing for voter integrity as he charged Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin had illegally altered their election rules, thus disenfranchising the voters of Texas.

While the Supreme Court refused to take the case, Paxton has succeeded in numerous other election integrity suits. He released his own statement on the impeachment that said in part, “Phelan’s coalition of Democrats and liberal Republicans is now in lockstep with the Biden Administration, the abortion industry, anti-gun zealots, and woke corporations to sabotage my work as Attorney General, including our ongoing litigation to stop illegal immigration, uphold the rule of law, and protect the constitutional rights of every Texan.”

Following the vote that left many prominent conservatives throughout the Lone Star State putting their representatives on notice as well, Trump asked one more key question of Gov. Greg Abbott, another endorsee for reelection in 2022, who had yet to issue a statement on the vote.

“MISSING IN ACTION! Where is the Governor of Texas on his Attorney General’s Impeachment?”
