Oh the humanity: Cross-dressing luggage thief Sam Brinton to be held in men’s jail

Former Biden nuclear official Sam Brinton, who has been nabbed for stealing luggage three times now, will be held in a men’s jail in Maryland while awaiting extradition charges that will send him to Virginia for stealing an African fashion designer’s suitcase.

The non-binary allegedly stole the luggage and wore the clothes in them over and over and over again at various events.

In an interview with the New York Post, a Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputy revealed that Brinton is in a “pre-placement” hold at the county jail and is expected to be housed with the “general population” of the men’s jail next week. The Montgomery County Department of Correction and Rehabilitation houses inmates according to their biological sex, not the gender they pick that day.

“Although MCDOCR does not consider anatomical changes brought about by hormonal therapy to be changes that constitute a change of anatomical sex, the classification of an arrestee/inmate will depend on whether the arrestee/inmate has male or female genitalia, whether they present a management or security problem, and whether their health and safety can be ensured,” the policy reads. “Once an inmate is classified, they will be given a housing assignment based on that classification.”

The nuclear engineer and LGBTQ activist, who uses they/them pronouns, was taken into custody at his home last week on May 17. He is facing grand larceny charges over the alleged theft of a suitcase belonging to a Tanzanian fashion designer while he was at Ronald Reagan National Airport.

The designer is Asya Khamsin. She was devastated that her luggage was ostensibly lost at the airport because it included her one-of-a-kind dresses created for a fashion show. The case went missing at Ronald Reagan National Airport on March 9, 2018. It contained “more than a dozen bespoke articles of clothing that she had designed, along with a number of other valuable items for her business,” according to her attorney Peter Hansen.

The designer posted pictures online of herself wearing her designs and Brinton wearing what looks like the exact same outfits.

The former deputy assistant secretary for spent fuel and waste in the Office of Nuclear Energy was fired by the Biden administration after twice stealing luggage previously in Minnesota and in Las Vegas in two separate cases. He was on parole for the incidents. He settled both cases and evaded jail time over the purported thefts.

This time, he may very well face prison time. Right now, the former Biden official is being held at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility until he appears before a judge on June 14.

When he was arrested, Brinton was considered a fugitive from justice. He is now being held without bail.

Hansen stated that his client had cooperated with authorities, providing them with information and a description of the clothes as part of an ongoing investigation, according to the New York Post.

Hansen also told the Daily Mail on Friday that his client “provided to the MWAA images of Mr. Brinton wearing her bespoke designs and lost jewelry, along with comparison photos showing them on models and Asya Khamsin herself.”

The designer told the New York Post in February that she was “confused” when she saw pictures of Brinton apparently wearing her designs at events as he made headlines for the two other thefts.

According to Khamzin’s attorney, during a search of Brinton’s home in Rockville on Wednesday, police “recovered a number of items matching the descriptions and images provided by Asya Khamsin.”
