Chris Christie says only someone with ‘guts’ and ‘skill’ should take on Trump: ‘It’s not going to end nicely’

Touting the moment he took out Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., during a 2016 presidential debate, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is essentially selling himself as the one Republican who can go toe-to-toe with Donald Trump and prevail — the irony here being that the pivotal moment he refers to was done in service to Trump, helping clear his path to the GOP nomination.

Speaking at a town hall at Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire, Christie stressed on Monday that it will take a person with “skill” to better the former president in a debate.

“You better have somebody on that stage who can do to him what I did to Marco [Rubio], because that’s the only thing that’s gonna defeat Donald Trump,” he explained.

“And that means you gotta have the skill to do it. And that means you have to be fearless because he will come back and right at you,” Christie said, before adding, “So you need to think about who’s got the skill to do that and who’s got the guts to do it, because it’s not going to end nicely.”

Christie stated the obvious when it comes to Trump, who can be quite bombastic, “No matter what, his end will not be a calm and quiet conclusion.”

Despite supporting Trump in 2016 and 2020, Christie now opposes another White House term for the former president. At the same time, the former governor is looking for a pathway to enter the race and considers his debate skills as an asset.

Christie called on Republican voters to reject the anger-fueled politics that he believes the MAGA movement represents.

“We are losing because we are playing to anger and retribution and self-indulgence rather than playing to making this country a better place,” he told those in attendance.

“It’s time for us as a party to choose who we want to lead us, who we think is prepared to lead us, who we think can bring us to win on the issues that we care the most about, not who the media or the pollsters or the pundits tell us is most likely to win,” Christie said.
