Janet Yellen makes surprise trip to Ukraine, delivers message of undying support and more taxpayer cash

The political class embrace of war in Eastern Europe continued in earnest this week when U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen made a surprise visit to Ukraine on Monday to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“I want you to know this: You are not alone. We are with you. The United States has your back — and we will stand with you for as long as it takes,” Yellen reassured Zelenskyy.

The Biden administration has been all in on making surprise visits to Kyiv to further the war effort against Russia. The latest trip coming as President Biden made it clear that there will be no surprise visit on his part to East Palestine, Ohio, to visit with the largely white, Trump-supporting population suffering from an ill-advised burn-off of toxic chemicals following a Norfolk Southern train derailment.

Yellen’s visit to Ukraine prompted the obvious question: Why?

Turning Point USA’s Charlie Kirk took a stab at the reason for the visit when he tweeted, “Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announces that the United States will send an additional $10 billion in economic assistance for Ukraine. Estimates of total US economic and military aid to Ukraine now range from $115 billion to $200 billion in the last 12 months.”

In the accompanying video, Yellen vowed that the U.S. will continue to support the Ukrainian “home front” by “funding critical public services and helping keep the government running.”

While D.C. politicians and the media rally behind supporting a country infamous for its corruption, the American people may be another story — the Associated Press reported in mid-February that “support among the American public for providing Ukraine weaponry and direct economic assistance has softened.”

As the war approached the one-year milestone, a new poll at the time showed that 48 percent favored the U.S. providing weapons to Ukraine — down from 60 percent in May 2022. There is a growing concern about mission creep leading to World War III, with the U.S. being drawn into a possible nuclear exchange with Russia.

Fox News host Laura Ingraham tweeted, “Let’s hope Yellen doesn’t do for Ukraine what she did here for inflation. Ukraine has suffered enough.”
