Navy Secretary warns US can’t keep pace with China’s ‘increasingly aggressive’ warship buildup

The US Secretary of the Navy is alarmingly warning that China’s naval fleet is surpassing America’s in strength, growing faster than ours, and that we simply can’t keep up with them as the world appears to be marching toward World War III.

“It is no secret that the People’s Republic of China seeks to upend our dominance on the oceans across the globe,” Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro stated at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.

Del Toro noted that China’s navy has added over a hundred ships to its fleet. He called it “a naval buildup that is a key component of its increasingly aggressive military posture globally.”

There are now approximately 340 warships in China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy. The American naval fleet has “over 280 ships ready to be deployed,” according to Del Toro.

China evidently plans to have 440 ships by 2030 but it is likely there will be an open conflict with the communist Chinese before that date. The Pentagon has a goal of 350 ships by 2045.

“Because of the incursion of a Chinese balloon into our air space, most Americans’ alarm bells have now gone off,” Del Toro declared.

Despite the alarm of Americans over Chinese spying, Del Toro notes that most are not aware that China “consistently” attempts to violate the maritime sovereignty and economic well-being of other nations. That includes our allies and trading partners in the South China Sea and elsewhere.

China claims the South China Sea as its own even though it isn’t recognized under international law. They have become increasingly aggressive there and have no intention of backing down.

“China’s disregard for the rules-based international order is particularly troubling in the maritime domain, from the Taiwan Straits to the high seas,” Del Toro asserted. “The values espoused by the Chinese Communist Party are incompatible with individual liberty, with democracy, and with respect for human rights.”

Del Toro is very worried about China’s shipbuilding capacity which far exceeds our own. According to CNN, he pointed to the fact that the communists have 13 shipyards, including one that has a shipbuilding capacity greater than all US yards combined.

The US has the advantage of having 11 aircraft carriers compared to China’s three. It’s also rumored that China is having trouble training enough ship-borne fighter jet pilots to properly man its carriers.

Regardless of that, experts contend that in a full-scale naval war, the bigger overall fleet almost always has a decisive advantage.

In January, Sam Tangredi, the Leidos Chair of Future Warfare Studies at the US Naval War College and a former US Navy captain warned in the US Naval Institute’s Proceedings magazine that in his analysis of 25 historical naval wars, the side with the larger fleet won in all but three cases.

“In a war between equally competent technological near peers—absent a series of amazing strokes of luck — the larger fleet always won,” he contended.

China’s aggression in the South China Sea is increasing as well.

On February 6, a Chinese coast guard ship allegedly directed a “military-grade laser” at a Philippine coast guard vessel. It temporarily blinded the crew on the bridge. China has denied doing it.

“I think it’s time for the Chinese government to restrain its forces so that it does not commit any provocative act that will endanger the lives of people,” Philippines military spokesperson Medel Aguilar told reporters, according to Reuters.

Aguilar quoted the Philippine defense chief calling the Chinese action “offensive” and unsafe.

The US is standing with the Philippines over the issue. US Naval Operations Chief Admiral Michael Gilday was in Manila on Wednesday. He proclaimed that the United States is “committed” to conducting joint maritime patrols with the Philippines in the disputed waterway to deter Chinese aggression, according to the AFP.

A four-star Air Force general sent out a memo to the officers he commands predicting that the US will be at war with China in two years and told them to get ready to prep by firing “a clip” at a target, and “aim for the head.”

In the memo that was obtained by NBC News, Gen. Mike Minihan, head of Air Mobility Command, said, “I hope I am wrong. My gut tells me will fight in 2025.”

Should that happen, the Philippines will be key in the fight against China.
