Norfolk Southern CEO, at his mansion, defends call to detonate derailed train, says black smoke plume proves it was ‘right move’

Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw was seen smiling while taking a walk Sunday outside his multi-million dollar mansion in Atlanta, Georgia.

Shaw was tracked down by the Daily Mail and the embattled executive spoke briefly with the tabloid, saying Norfolk Southern was “committed” to the Ohio residents impacted by the decision to detonate the toxic train cars that derailed earlier this month in East Palestine — a decision Shaw has defended.

“We remain committed to the citizens of East Palestine,” Shaw said when pressed to comment on what Norfolk was doing.

The CEO makes $4.5 million a year and owns more than 20 properties across Georgia and Virginia, reportedly spending much of his time in a $4.2 million Atlanta mansion or on one of his two boats, according to the Daily Mail.

While in East Palestine on Saturday, Shaw told WKBN that he was pleased with the clean-up effort so far, but he defended the decision to blow up five train cars carrying vinyl chloride, saying it was the “right move” to mitigate the threat of the carcinogenic chemicals. As for the “terrifying” plume of black smoke that resulted from the controlled burn, he dismissed all the “disinformation” and said that was proof the burn was successful in preventing a “much riskier event.”

“I understand why this has created a lot of national attention,” Shaw said. “What we’re trying to do is work closely with the local leaders on the environmental remediation, getting information right, data-based, science-based information. All the misinformation out there, that’s really causing a lot of issues, frankly for the people of this community.”

“This has been devastating to the community,” he added. “I want to make sure you understand, I am terribly sorry that this happened to the community,’ Shaw added. ‘Norfolk Southern is fully committed to doing what is right for this community.”
