FBI scrambles to retract after leaked document reportedly outlines bureau plan to spy on Catholics

With the FBI acting more and more like a domestic intelligence agency than a law enforcement bureau, this corner being turned after 9/11, there are growing concerns about its priorities, be it targeting parents for wanting to protect their children from “woke” indoctrination or interfering in presidential elections, as seen in 2020 when the FBI seemingly led the effort to suppress reporting on Hunter Biden’s infamous “laptop from hell.”

We can now add Catholics to the list of targets in furtherance of the FBI’s pursuit of the mythical threat of white supremacy — or should we say “was” a target.

A leaked document making the rounds online suggests that the bureau’s Richmond division launched an investigation into “radical traditionalist” Catholics and their possible ties to “the far-right white nationalist movement,” the Catholic News Agency reported.

The FBI’s national press office confirmed to CNA that the document came from the Richmond office, and said that the bureau was retracting the document as it endeavors to fight “violent extremism.”

“While our standard practice is to not comment on specific intelligence products, this particular field office product — disseminated only within the FBI — regarding racially or ethnically motivated violent extremism does not meet the exacting standards of the FBI,” read a statement from the FBI National Press Office.

“Upon learning of the document, FBI Headquarters quickly began taking action to remove the document from FBI systems and conduct a review of the basis for the document,” the statement continued. “The FBI is committed to sound analytic tradecraft and to investigating and preventing acts of violence and other crimes while upholding the constitutional rights of all Americans and will never conduct investigative activities or open an investigation based solely on First Amendment protected activity.”

Published on the website UncoverDC, the document is titled “Interest of Racially or Ethnically Motivated Violent Extremists in Radical-Traditionalist Catholic Ideology Almost Certainly Presents New Mitigation Opportunities,” and “singles out Catholics who are interested in the Traditional Latin Mass as potentially linked to violent extremist groups,” CNA reported.

The document relies on the highly biased, left-wing Southern Poverty Law Center to list organizations with Catholic ties — as CNA noted, the organization has labeled any number of pro-family conservative organizations as “hate groups,” including Alliance Defending Freedom, the Family Research Council, ACT for America, the Center for Security Policy, and the American Freedom Law Center.

Here’s more from CNA on what the documents contained:

The document, dated Jan. 23, claims that racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists will likely become more interested in “radical-traditionalist Catholic ideology” within the next 12 to 24 months “in the run-up to the next general election cycle.”

It points to potential “policy issues of mutual interest” between “radical-traditional” Catholics and violent extremists such as “abortion rights, immigration, affirmative action, and LGBTQ protections.”

The document further claims that violent extremists have “sought out and attended traditionalist Catholic houses of worship,” which “presents new opportunities for threat mitigation” through “trip wire or source development” within churches that offer the Latin Mass and “radical-traditionalist” Catholic online communities.

While the FBI has long had a somewhat tarnished reputation, given the antics of none other than J. Edgar Hoover himself, it’s clear that today’s FBI is a far cry more intrusive in American life than your grandfather’s FBI.

Former FBI special agent Kyle Seraphin obtained the leaked FBI document that outlines a plan to spy on Catholics.

“The FBI’s Richmond Division would like to protect Virginians from the threat of ‘white supremacy,’ which it believes has found a home within Catholics who prefer the Latin Mass,” Seraphin reported for Uncover DC. “An intelligence analyst within the Richmond Field Office of the FBI released in a new finished intelligence product dated January 23, 2023, on Racially or Ethnically Motivated Violent Extremists (RMVE) and their interests in ‘Radical-Traditionalist Catholics’ or RTCs.”

According to Seraphin, the document “assesses with ‘high confidence’ the FBI can mitigate the threat of Radical-Traditionalist Catholics by recruiting sources within the Catholic Church.”

He further questioned the FBI’s misplaced priorities, suggesting that they were motivated by political bias.

“While over 100 instances of attacks on pro-life pregnancy centers occurred in 2022, the SPLC reported an unsubstantiated 200 ‘bombings or arson attacks’ on abortion clinics in the past 20 years,” Seraphin wrote. “This tremendous statistical mismatch usually would have led federal law enforcement to focus on the highest threat, but the increasingly Leftist bend of FBI enforcement actions appears to have ignored this trend.”
