‘It’s not like Brooklyn’: Ex-NFL player pummeled with ignorant hate after he kills massive mountain lion terrorizing town

When a former NFL player took action to protect his community from a nearly 200-pound mountain lion, harassment poured in. So on Monday, he joined Fox News host Tucker Carlson to set the record straight.

“It’s not like Brooklyn at all,” Carlson concluded.

Last week, Derek Wolfe was contacted after someone in his neighborhood had lost two of her dogs to a mountain lion that had reportedly been living under her porch. After tracking the cat to a nearly 10,000-foot elevation, the former footballer who retired last year shot and killed it with a bow and arrow.

Following the kill, Wolfe posted an image of himself with the cat that included a rundown of the story, and then the hate began pouring in.

“I can’t believe what’s happening to me,” he said on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” Monday.

“I can’t believe that going on a legal hunt, doing something legal, by the book — they’ve had 200 calls to Colorado Parks and Wildlife trying to turn me in like I did something wrong.”

“I did nothing wrong, everything’s legal,” Wolfe continued.

In addition to those calls, negative comments rolled in on social media that blamed the residents for being in the mountain lion’s territory or for failing to keep their dogs inside.

“Terrorizing???? Or maybe because ya’ll encroached on it’s home and it was hungry!! Naw this ain’t it!! Smdh!! There aren’t enough to go around and they don’t repopulate like deer etc. sooo try again.. THIS IS NOT A WIN MY FRIEND!! This is just ridiculous!!!” someone raved.

“Or did neighborhood wreak havoc on the lions habitat and it’s now just trying to survive,” one wrote as another argued, “Grant is not a city. When you live in rural Colorado you sign up for living WITH wildlife. There are guidelines for NOT making your dogs a food source. Go back to Kentucky.”

So, to open his segment with Carlson, the avid hunter began, “You know, Tucker, before I get into the specifics of the actual hunt I want to give some background on the mountain lion issue here in Colorado.”

Wolfe then proceeded to explain that 23 people had been attacked by the cats since 1990 and in the span of 30 days in one town alone last year, 15 pet dogs were killed and Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) were not responding to concerns from the public.

The player, who went on to explain in the comments of his original post that the cat weighed in at 173 pounds, detailed to Carlson the procedure of treeing the cat with dogs to verify that it was a male before making a kill because “It’s important to manage the herd.”

He further explained that the male mountain lions were known to kill even their own kittens in order to get the females to go back into heat and that, “I was able to make a good shot, a good ethical shot and harvested the cat and got him out of there and did everything by the book. This was completely legal.”

“I’ve been through some tough training camps but this hunt…it beat me up bad.”

“I’m all cut up and scraped up. I was in full body cramps,” Wolfe detailed from dehydration and the altitude. He also explained in the post that he had to drag the cat down the mountain while crawling backward in order to get it to his truck and he fell 10 feet off a rock face in the process.

In further support of the ethical kill, Wolfe had the animal checked in with CPW and he told Carlson, “I’m gonna eat that cat.”

Ultimately, the host who supported the football player’s successful hunt said, “The main reason I wanted to have you on tonight was to just remind people who live…in urban America, it’s different when you live in a place where mountain lions kill people and pets. It’s not like Brooklyn at all. And so maybe people should understand that before they run around making threats against men like you.”
