Un-Scientific Un-American

Scientific American just abandoned science and has set out to wreck America.

What else should we make of an article that ghoulishly takes the shocking – and freak – injury to Buffalo’s Damar Hamlin and uses it to argue that football injuries are racist?

I’m not making that up. Scientific American actually published an article by someone unironically called Tracie Canada with this headline: “Damar Hamlin’s Collapse Highlights the Violence Black Men Experience in Football.”

It is apparently news to everyone at that once-august publication that everyone who plays football experiences violence. It’s a violent sport in which the rules stipulate that you must bring the man carrying the ball to the ground, or get him out of bounds, to stop him. Football players wear literal armor – helmets, plated pads that cover their shoulders and ribs, and pads down their legs to help prevent them from breaking from the sheer force of the hits and tackles that are inherent parts of the pro football game.

Black men – and white men, Hispanic men, and every other race of men who play the sport – experience violence. Maybe Scientific American and its writers and editors should actually take in a game now and then. If they did, they would see this with their own eyes.

But that may not matter. Injecting racism into literally every corner and cranny of American life is the sole reason to exist for too many publications and writers now. Our age of instant information absent context, perspective, and wisdom is creating generations of the least original thinkers imaginable. They’re one gigantic race-obsessed herd, unable and too fearful to think for themselves.

This obsession ignores the fact that numerous white men not only experience and experienced violence throughout football history, many of them suffered gruesome, career-ending injuries. One of the most infamous of these is the broken leg then-Washington then-Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann suffered on national TV. He stepped back to pass against the division rivals New York Giants on November 18, 1985, was hit with such force that his lower right leg snapped, and he never played football again. Did Theismann suffer this injury because of the color of his skin? Did Troy Aikman suffer concussion after concussion because he’s white? Is Roger Staubach’s throwing hand still mangled from hits because he is white and a military veteran? What about J.J. Watt’s many injuries, or Brett Favre’s, or Joe Montana’s, or any other player who suffered injuries who happens to be white?

Of course not. Damar Hamlin didn’t suffer cardiac arrest against the Bengals after a routine hit because he’s black either. Suggesting that any of this happened due to skin color is absurd, but we live in an absurd age that is becoming as unscientific as any so-called dark age of the past.

NFL Hall of Fame former coach Tony Dungy, who is black, stepped up to shoot down unScientific American quickly. “As a black man and former NFL player I can say this article is absolutely ridiculous,” Dungy says.

We live in a craven time of opportunism, in which facts no longer matter and principles and truth don’t exist. Following the trails blazed by racist race hustlers like Al Sharpton who proved that cries of racism can get you absolved of inciting real violence and bring on fame and fortune, it’s now the main if not the only goal of many pundits and attention-seekers to weaponize race to create wealth and opportunity for themselves. Even so-called science magazines have no shame and just want the clicks.

Here’s the truth: Until proven otherwise, every single cry of racism is nothing more or less than an opportunist seeking attention and cash. That’s it. That’s where we are as a society. Unfortunately it works more often than not.

Football may have gone woke at the NFL, but the game still represents manliness and is a unique American gathering place and pastime. It’s one of the few things remaining that unifies millions of Americans, which we saw after Hamlin’s collapsed when millions of us prayed for him – not as a black man or white man or any of that, but as a human. As an American. A moment of tragedy that turned uplifting. That’s part of the problem to the race-obsessed left. The only thing they want Americans unified around is their warped anti-American worldview. So if football must be destroyed, if it must be turned into yet another symbol of racism and division, so be it.

Hamlin himself isn’t seeing race in any of this. His first question after he awoke from the injury was to ask if his Bill won the game. He’s thankful for all the prayers and asking for more. Football fans owe him that and are happy to pray for him more. We also owe it to him to protect and preserve the game he plays so well.
