An odd thing is occurring as the raucous process of selecting the next speaker of the House plays out within the Republican Party, CNN and MSNBC are suddenly receptive to GOP lawmakers coming on air to pontificate about an occurrence these left-leaning networks are glomming on to in their latest effort to smear the party.
This clash of ideologies working out about as well as one might expect, as seen on Thursday when Rep.-elect Troy Nehls, R-Texas, appeared on CNN. Not only did the Republican lawmaker refer to anchor Erin Burnett as “young lady,” he called CNN “the Clinton News Network.”
Nehls supports Kevin McCarthy, who has not been able to acquire the 218 votes needed to become speaker due to a group of 20 holdouts in his caucus, and Burnett asked the Texas lawmaker about the possibility of there being something that could “shake” his support for the Republican leader.
“Listen, I don’t know if you’re aware of young lady, but I am also a member of the House Freedom Caucus,” Nehls replied. “So I am one of those America First patriots. And I have said to my friends, my colleagues in the Freedom Caucus that I don’t believe that this is the battle we should be waging. I think the real battle starts when we start drafting legislation and policy in the 118th Congress under a Speaker McCarthy.”

“And you have to understand, your viewers have to understand there’s 35 to 40 of us in the House Freedom Caucus. If we have a simple, small, thin margin of 222 Republicans, it takes 218 of us to pass any legislation. The House Freedom Caucus is more relevant than ever,” he continued. “So I believe that is the battle — those are the kinds of the conversations that should take place, because Kevin McCarthy understands that in order for him to pass anything in this 118th Congress, he’s going to need support and the endorsement from the House Freedom Caucus. And that’s when I believe we should have these conversations.”
Burnett was not about to let the “young lady” assessment go unchallenged, “I assume when you called me a young lady, it was a compliment.”
“Of course it was,” Nehls said with a smile, before adding: “This is my first time on the Clinton News Network.”
“Okay, that I will say, in my opinion, was a bit rude,” she countered, somewhat good-naturedly. “But I’m glad you’re talking to me and I’ll treat you with the respect that you deserve.”
U.S. Rep.-elect Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., a McCarthy holdout, appeared on MSNBC this week and that exchange went just as you might expect it to go as she battled with anchor Stephanie Ruhle over the Constitution.
