Terrifying moment Fla. cop almost dies from fentanyl exposure captured on body cam

Florida Police Officer Courtney Bannick almost lost her life Tuesday when she was “exposed to fentanyl” during a traffic stop and as a result, started choking and could not breathe, requiring the administration of Narcan to keep her from dying as she vomited in the street.

Bannick pulled over a suspect in the early hours of Tuesday morning and reportedly found narcotics rolled up in a dollar bill. It’s not clear how she came into contact with the fentanyl.

After taking the passenger into custody and transporting them to jail, her colleagues heard her having trouble breathing over the radio. The officers ran to her to provide aid and found her semi-conscious and on the verge of dying, according to the Tavares Police Department.

That incident will undoubtedly be added to the suspect’s pending felony charges after an investigation takes place.

Frightening footage of Bannick on the side of a dark road, struggling to survive has surfaced. Officers took her, wide-eyed and breathless, from her vehicle to the sidewalk to administer aid. She fell down on her back as her fellow officers told her to hang in there while administering the Narcan. After they gave it to her, she rolled over and vomited in the street.

As they awaited an ambulance, Bannick can be seen leaning on the legs of an officer and breathing heavily. Suddenly, her face went blank and she stopped moving. Officers shouted at her to breathe and lightly slapped her face to keep her awake. They had to give her more Narcan before she snapped out of it.

Naxolone, which is sold under the brand name Narcan, is the most effective means to counter an overdose. Many schools are now stockpiling it.

The fast-acting nasal spray quickly counters the drug’s effect on the brain but it can only be used immediately after an overdose.

Bannick was taken to a hospital and is expected to fully recover from her brush with death.

“She was completely lifeless. She looks deceased in these videos,” Tavares Police Detective Courtney Sullivan told Fox 35 in an interview. “So she’s very thankful today.”

The disturbing part about all of this was that Bannick was wearing gloves and following protocol when she was somehow exposed to fentanyl. Officers believe she may have been exposed due to the wind blowing the drugs into her system. They planned to test the substance at the station and not at the scene because it was so windy, according to the New York Post.

“I have done this one-hundred times before the same way. It only takes one time and a minimal amount,” Bannick stated after the incident. “I’m thankful I wasn’t alone and had immediate help.”

“If the other officers weren’t there, there’s a very chance and probability that today would be different,” Detective Sullivan noted, “and that we would be wearing our thin blue line – the straps that go over our badges.”

The names of the suspects who were in possession of the drug will not be released until they are charged according to the Tavares Police Department.

Fentanyl has become a scourge on the streets of America. It is used to cut drugs such as cocaine and heroin and is deadly.
