Colorado nightclub shooter identifies as ‘non-binary,’ asks to be referred to as ‘Mx. Aldrich’

The attorney for the suspected Colorado Springs gay club shooter, Anderson Lee Aldrich, has pointedly asked the court to use “they/them” pronouns when addressing his client because he identifies as “non-binary.”

New York Times reporter Nicholas Bogel-Burroughs revealed a page from a court document in the case showing that the defense requested that the court refer to the suspected killer as “Mx. Aldrich.”

The document reads, “Mx. Anderson Aldrich, by and through counsel, makes this motion to the Court demanding their right to a preliminary hearing and in support, Mx. Aldrich states the following:

1. The prosecution has filed charges against Mx. Aldrich.
2. Mx. Aldrich demands their constitutional right to a bond and to Due Process. U.S. Amends, V, VI, XIV; Colo. Const. Art. II, §§ 19, 25.
3. Mx. Aldrich demands their right to a preliminary hearing. C.R.S.§ 19-2.5-609 (I); Crim. P. 5; Crim. P. 7 (h).

Anderson Aldrich W non-binary. They use they/them pronouns, and for the purposes of all formal filings, will be addressed as Mx. Aldrich.”

Aldrich, 22, is being charged with slaughtering five people and wounding 25 others inside Club Q on Saturday night. He will potentially face murder and hate crime charges.

Hate crime charges require proving that the shooter was motivated by bias. The charges against Aldrich are still preliminary, and prosecutors have not yet filed formal charges. Aldrich is represented by Joseph Archambault, who is a chief trial deputy with the state public defender’s office.

It is unknown if the suspected shooter used alternative gender pronouns before the incident but he did previously change his name while in his teens, according to the Daily Mail. His real name is Nicholas Franklin Brink. The name change was reportedly meant “to protect himself and his future from any connections to birth father,” Aaron Brink after alleged online bullying.

Following the shooting, it was widely posited that he killed people inside the club because he had been radicalized against the LGBTQ community.

The police in El Paso County have not disclosed a motive for the mass shooting yet. Aldrich was briefly hospitalized after club patrons took him down as he was shooting people. Aldrich was subdued by US Army veteran Richard M. Fierro and Thomas Jane and a drag performer. He is now in police custody.

The shooter was also an inactive member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, according to The Washington Post.

Aldrich reportedly comes from an extremely dysfunctional family. His father is, or was, a porn star named “Dick Delaware.” Brink reportedly left Aldrich’s mother when he was a baby, before taking up MMA fighting and porn work.

The father also made appearances on the reality shows “Divorce Court” and “Intervention” in 2009. During that time, his fiancée was reportedly attempting to get him off of crystal meth, according to the New York Post.

Brink has a lengthy criminal history that includes convictions for battery against the shooter’s mother, Laura Voepel.

The father was sentenced to two and a half years in custody for the importation of marijuana. While he was on supervised release, he violated his conditions by testing positive for illegal steroids, according to public records.

In 2021, Aldrich allegedly threatened his mother with a homemade bomb, which forced his neighbors in surrounding homes to evacuate while the bomb squad and crisis negotiators got him to surrender.

His mother Laura is shown on Ring camera footage walking with Aldrich into the house. Once he got inside, he filmed himself in SWAT gear, broadcasting live on his mother’s Facebook account.

“This is your boy, I’ve got the f*****g s**theads outside. F*****g s**theads got their f*****g rifles out. If they breach I’m [going to] blow it to holy hell. Come on in boys, let’s f*****g see it!” he declared in the video.

It does not appear that prosecutors moved forward with charges against Aldrich at the time.
