‘CHARGE HIM!’ WaPo enrages the left when it throws cold water on Mar-a-Lago raid

The Washington Post triggered massive liberal backlash this week by posting a story debunking the left’s lies about the classified documents that were found at former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property.

Leftist conspiracy theorists have spent months arguing that he’d brought the classified documents home with him to share them with foreign agents — think shadowy Russians — because he’s a traitor who’s working against America’s interests.

But according to the Post, this narrative is bull.

“Federal agents and prosecutors have come to believe former president Donald Trump’s motive for allegedly taking and keeping classified documents was largely his ego and a desire to hold on to the materials as trophies or mementos, according to people familiar with the matter,” the left-wing outlet reported Monday.

Now understand something: Federal authorities didn’t just reach this conclusion out of thin air. They conducted an investigation. And as part of the investigation, they reviewed all of the documents “to see if the types of information contained in them pointed to any kind of pattern or similarities,” according to the Post.

But they found squat: “That review has not found any apparent business advantage to the types of classified information in Trump’s possession.”

Nor have the FBI’s interviews with witnesses revealed any sort of nefarious plot.

“Instead, the former president seemed motivated by a more basic desire not to give up what he believed was his property, these people said,” according to the Post.

And there it is.

Now cue the brutal backlash against the Post and the unnamed federal agents who leaked this story to them:

Leftists also shrieked that even if the report is accurate, Trump should still be charged and incarcerated because “[a]nyone else would already be indicted, arrested, arraigned, and have a trial scheduled,” as one put it.

“Anyone else” except Hillary Rodham Clinton, that it is. While the nature of her crimes were slightly different, she nevertheless also improperly handled classified documents but never faced any consequences for her bad behavior.

It’s not clear why they’re so obsessed with Trump and, likewise, so hellbent on him being punished for taking home classified documents.

Over on the right meanwhile, there’s been nothing but shrugs and the occasional “I told you so” over the Post’s reporting.

“Of course this was always the most plausible explanation. Didn’t stop people from speculating he was going to sell nuclear codes to the Russians or some such nonsense,” popular conservative radio show host Ben Shapiro tweeted about the Post’s bombshell.

Unfortunately, even confirmation from the Biden Department of Justice — via the Post, of course — about Trump’s benign motivations for keeping the classified documents hasn’t stopped the conspiracy theorizing. It appears, in fact, nothing ever will …
