HS girls’ volleyball player badly injured with 70 mph spike to the head by a biological male

Last month in Cherokee County, North Carolina, a high school girls’ volleyball game was played between Hiwassee Dam High and Highlands High. One of the players on the Highlands team, a biological male, hammered a spike at an estimated 70 mph. The shot looked different than the shots the biological girls were making. It was “abnormally fast,” said one witness.

The spike beaned a Hiwassee Dam girl in the head. The assaulted player went down hard, having suffered devastating injuries to her head and neck. A month has passed, and she is still suffering from a long-term concussion, including impairment to her vision. She has not been cleared to play.

The names of both players have been protected.

The Cherokee County Board of Education met on Sept. 21 and decided, in a 5-1 vote, that Hiwassee Dam High School forfeit all girls’ volleyball matches against Highlands School.

It was decided further that “The County will not participate in any volleyball games, varsity or junior varsity, against Highlands due to safety concerns.”

The meeting did not directly address transgender athletes. In a tightrope act, participants didn’t refer to any player’s sexuality, relying on subtext to limit the discussion to safety and fairness.

Hiwassee Dam’s athletic director, David Payne, supported the decision, saying “a statement needed to be made and that it’s unfair and unsafe.” He equivocated, though, citing “mixed feelings” from players and parents about facing Highlands in the future.

Vice Chair Jeff Martin said, “there is a competitive advantage and a safety concern for certain teams — it’s not the same for all teams.”

He made sure to note that this decision didn’t reflect any animus toward transgenders.

“I can tell you that the board wasn’t searching out this kind of thing,” he said. “It was brought to our attention based on safety concerns.”

Board member Joe Wood claimed that the decision emerged over concern for safety, not gender.

Board member Jeff Tatham concurred: “The biggest thing for us, especially after seeing the video of the injury, we felt very strongly that it was a safety concern.”

Tatham then came the closest to addressing the real issue.

“I think most of the board members also felt like there’s a competitive advantage issue,” he said.

The one vote against the decision was, amazingly, cast by a woman. Keesha Curtis dissented, saying that she “believes all school principals and ADs should make that decision,” not the board.

In a world full of studies and grants, it is not as though this hasn’t been considered. A 2015 study revealed that males are significantly more effective than females at “attacking” the ball. The body of males also allows for greater momentum and power on jump ball returns.

Paging Dr. Obvious.

One Twitter user said, “Fighting for women’s rights against biological men… Again!!! Think liberals care about your rights, ladies” This sh-t has to stop immediately.” Another said, “Did you ever think we would live to see our daughters and granddaughters exposed to this evil?”

The politics of this should be interesting in North Carolina. Addressing Tim Moore, who is the Democratic Speaker of the House in the state, one user posted this:

This has been a hot topic in North Carolina high school sports and has started much-needed conversations. In decisions that have aged well, 18 states passed laws (by the summer of 2022) requiring athletes to participate in sports based on their biological sex.

Ohio passed a particularly strongly-worded bill, which requires transgender students to provide a doctor’s note detailing their sexual anatomy, their testosterone levels, and their genetic makeup.

Republicans in New Jersey have also proposed a bill, the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, which would require female student-athletes to verify the nature of their genitals before they can compete.

It’s one thing for William Thomas, aka Lia Thomas, to dash out in front of female competitors in a pool. It is another for biological males to play contact sports with girls. What fresh nonsense is this?

Just imagine being a full-grown male who decided to play against girls and then severely injuring one.

Imagine being a school or district decision-maker who allowed this guy to play against girls.

In deciding this player’s eligibility, apparently, there was no person of authority who took a step back from the spirit of the age and said, we shouldn’t allow this, someone is going to get hurt.
