Ex-GOP Rep. cuts ad for Democrat candidate because he can’t support ‘facts-challenged individuals’

Former Virginia Republican Rep. Denver Riggleman decided to cut an ad for his Democratic House colleague, Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) asserting that he is unable to throw his support behind “facts-challenged individuals” running in elections.

Riggleman, a Nelson County distillery owner, quit the GOP in June. He served in the House as a Republican for two years before changing his political affiliation to Independent and was unbelievably at one time a member of the House Freedom Caucus. He asserts that Spanberger can work across the aisle and get things done.

Spanberger, who served as a postal inspector and CIA case officer, is running against Republican Yesli Vega, who has called the results of the 2020 presidential election into question. Riggleman can’t stomach that evidently and has gone to the left side of the political aisle instead, cutting an ad for Vega’s opponent.

“If you’re afraid to come out and say President Biden was elected legally and fairly, there’s no way I can support that kind of ridiculousness,” Riggleman told The Washington Post in an interview trashing his former party and embracing leftist assertions.

“Facts-based over facts-challenged is my litmus test. Abby wins hands down,” Riggleman told the Washington Examiner.

The ad is somewhat disingenuous from the get-go. Although it states in writing that Riggleman is a former Republican, he touts that he is still one at the beginning of the ad, which he isn’t.

“This is not a typical political ad,” he stated at the opening of the ad. “I’m a Republican congressman saying nice things about a Democrat.”

“The parties sit apart and don’t sit together — except Abigail Spanberger,” he claimed, going on to cite a report calling Spanberger one the most bipartisan members of Congress.

Spanberger is seeking a third term representing Virginia’s 7th Congressional District in a very tight race, according to the Cook Political Report.

Riggleman, spewing Democrat talking points, told the Washington Post that remarks made by Vega in April show “there’s evidence that continues to come out that indicates that the election of 2020 was interfered with.”

Vega said at a candidate forum that she did not think the election was “stolen,” but also said, “I don’t want to speculate … I need more evidence.”

In true leftist fashion, Riggleman also charged that Vega had welcomed an endorsement from Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, the unabashed conservative wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas who has become a lightning rod for Democrats over the Jan. 6 riot.

The ad with Riggleman is running in the DC and Charlottesville media markets. The price tag was over half a million dollars for it according to Spanberger’s campaign.

Riggleman lost his reelection primary in 2020 to Rep. Bob Good (R-VA). The Virginia County Republican Party censured him in 2019 after he officiated a same-sex marriage.

“This resolution was unanimously passed by the Appomattox County Republican Committee who are passionate about supporting our President Donald J. Trump. We will hold accountable all Republican elected officials to stand by the Virginia Republican Creed and National Republican Platform and to support all our Republican nominees,” Christian Raymond, chairman of the Appomattox County Republican Committee, stated according to WDBJ7.

Riggleman was also accused of “abandoning party principles,” including on fiscal spending and immigration.

He is an outspoken opponent of former President Trump’s claims of election fraud. Riggleman’s stance on issues appears to be far more aligned with Democrats than Republicans.

After he left Congress, he notably worked as an adviser to the Jan. 6 select committee. The former Republican upended the panel in September dropping a bombshell revelation concerning its still-private work while promoting his own self-serving book about the committee’s probe.
