VP Harris was in a car accident, oddly and falsely attributed to 'mechanical failure'

On Monday, an SUV carrying Vice President Kamala Harris was in an accident that was initially described as being caused by a “mechanical failure.”

The minor incident occurred at around 10:30 am as Harris was headed to the White House. The driver of the vehicle “had a minor overcorrection and struck a curb,” explained Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. The collision did not cause any injuries, but the impact did cause enough damage to the tire that it needed to be replaced. The entire motorcade escorting Harris had to be brought to a stop until the necessary fixes were made.

Video regarding the aftermath of the bump was first posted to TikTok but at the time it was published, an official description of the incident had not been made.

The Washington Post noted that the accident was first blamed on a “mechanical failure” which even went out to an alert to senior leadership to explain why the motorcade was delayed. However, Guglielmi noted that this was a miscommunication and was later corrected.

“Initial radio traffic indicated this was a mechanical failure, and that was communicated to agency leadership by personnel supporting the motorcade movement,” he explained. “After the protective movement was completed, leadership was verbally updated with additional pertinent facts that the vehicle struck a curb.”

Despite the fact that this may seem like a minor inaccuracy, Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle reportedly voiced her concerns about just how wrong the initial alert was, according to a WaPo source from within the agency.

According to the report, even VP Harris is wondering how a driver managed to end up jumping a curb given their extensive training.

Ultimately, the accident only caused a few minutes of delay and nobody involved including the vice president was injured, said Harris’ spokeswoman Kirsten Allen.

“The Vice President sustained no injuries and appreciates the quick response by her [Secret Service] detail to get her to the White House safely.”
