Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School gunman Nikolas Cruz allegedly left a MAGA hat in his adoptive mother’s casket and coldly laughed about it while in jail awaiting his sentencing trial in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
His stepmother, Lynda Cruz, was reportedly terrified of the twisted killer who murdered 14 students and three staff members in 2018.
“She told me she was scared of him,” neighbor Paul Gold testified. “She told me not to believe the nice appearance he had and angelic ways and that he would turn and do bad things. And she was a little afraid of him at some times.”
Gold told jurors that Cruz would have “episodes” and that it was “almost like it was another person who had done it.”

“He would be very nice and pleasant to people and wanting to be nice to people and then another moment he would lose his temper and break things and seem out of his mind,” he claimed. “Then when he calmed down you could see that he really was apologetic, almost like it was another person who had done it.”
“The first time I met [Nikolas Cruz], I knew he needed some serious help,” Gold said adding he had such a “short fuse” that it was physically evident in the Cruz home. “The walls there were punched. Doors there were broken.”
Cruz told his roommate Richard Moore during a video visit in jail that he missed his adoptive mother Lynda Cruz, who died of pneumonia in November 2017, but found it funny after he left the hat in her casket according to a transcript of the conversation obtained by Local10 News.
That sick fact surfaced the same day that a neighbor testified that Cruz’s stepmother was terrified of him because of his unpredictable and explosive temper.
During the trial, jurors were shown photos that depicted the results of that violent temper in the family home. It will be one of many factors they will consider as they decide whether to give him life in prison or a needle in the arm.

The stepmother was a “liberal anti-gun type” and Cruz made a twisted final political commentary by leaving the hat in her casket according to the Miami Herald. He would later request that it be removed and expressed regret he had done it.
“Due to the fact that his mother hated Donald Trump he put it in her casket with her when she died and took a picture of her with the hat,” Hunter McCutcheon, Cruz’s friend, told a detective.
Cruz later asked Patricia Devaney-Westerlind, who is a neighbor who has had video visits with him this year, to retrieve the hat. He asked her to “remove the MAGA hat he left since he knew his mother would [not] like it [in] there,” according to a transcript.
The gunman is now on trial for his killing spree after pleading guilty.
According to the Daily Mail, Cruz saw his adoptive father die from a heart attack before his sixth birthday. Not long after that, he started exhibiting “violent and troubled” behavior.
Most criminals of his caliber are “severely troubled”. But, he knew right from wrong at the time of the incident, and that’s all that matters.

He allegedly began killing frogs, squirrels, and other animals. After one of his dogs died from toad poisoning, Cruz went on a toad killing binge. He would also reportedly sneak into his neighbor’s yard and attempt to get their dogs to attack their potbelly pigs, according to the Washington Post.
He asked during a middle school lesson on the US Civil War if people “ate” the bodies of dead people and wanted to know what it “sounded like” when Abraham Lincoln was shot dead, according to disturbing evidence shown in court.
During middle school, Cruz frequently threatened teachers and others, and his drawings of gunshot victims were so disturbing that one teacher kept them for years. They were turned over to authorities after the massacre.
His bizarre and violent behavior has now become a focal point in his trial which is expected to continue until October.
