Two people were reportedly killed and the shooter was found dead by police. It is unclear whether he committed suicide or was taken out by an armed citizen during his killing spree. Open carry of firearms is legal statewide without a permit in Oregon.

Fox News Digital is reporting that police responded to an active shooter call at the store just after 7 p.m. according to Bend Police Department spokesperson Sheila Miller.

She said the shooting began in a Big Lots store before the gunman moved into the Safeway and confirmed no one in Big Lots was injured, according to the Daily Mail.

The incident took place at the Forum Shopping Center in Bend. The shooter evidently entered the parking lot from a residential area behind the store, according to a statement made by Police Chief Mike Krantz at a press conference. No one was injured in the parking lot.

The shooter entered the building and then allegedly shot and killed someone at the front of the Safeway store. He then reportedly walked through the store and shot and killed a second individual. A third person suffered non-fatal injuries and is in stable condition.

Shots were still being fired when police arrived on the scene. At that point, they found the suspect dead. Krantz reported that officers did not fire any shots.

An AR-15-style rifle and a shotgun were found near the body of the suspect according, to Krantz. There was no evidence of a second shooter being involved.

A shopper named Molly Taroli told The Bulletin newspaper that she was with her husband in Safeway shopping for dinner when the shooter went through the store “spraying shots.”

Taroli recounted that she took her handgun from her purse to defend herself as she heard employees yelling “go, go, go!” as they fled the shooter.

Customers were herded into the stock room and out through the back door.

Another shopper named Josh Caba told KTVZ he was with his four children when he heard multiple shots ring out.

“I immediately turned to my children and said, ‘Run!’ People were screaming,” Caba said. “It was a horrifying experience.”

Jessica Swartz, who is the owner of a nearby food cart, said she didn’t hear the shots but knew something bad was happening when her customers suddenly got up and left in a “mass exodus.”

“I feel like we’ve now become a statistic,” she remarked, according to the Daily Mail.

The shooter and the victims have not been identified yet.

Krantz asserts that the investigation is ongoing and police are obtaining warrants to search residences in the area.

“Our hearts go out to the victims and their families,” Krantz stated. “We know this is frightening for our community and something we would never want to happen in our city,” adding that they are “following up on every lead.”

At the time of the Safeway altercation, other possible shootings were reported in the area but none of them panned out.
