A University of West Georgia professor named Richard Sigman has been fired and charged with murder in the brutal shooting and killing of an 18-year-old freshman named Anna Jones.

Jones was set to start classes at the university in August according to 11Alive News. Instead, her funeral will be held after an allegedly drunk Sigma got into a violent argument with another man at Leopoldo’s, a local pizzeria.

According to the Carrollton Police Department, the former professor was arrested on July 30 after he reportedly fired into a car that was parked on the courthouse parking deck in Adamson Square just after midnight on Saturday morning.

“The male notified security that Sigman threatened to shoot him. Security approached Sigman, saw he had a weapon, and told him to leave. Sigman then left walking toward the parking deck,” police recounted. “The investigation then indicates Sigman walked into the parking deck and began shooting into a parked vehicle striking the victim.”

After Jones was shot, her friends drove her to Tanner Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

It is unknown if Sigman knew Jones or who his actual target was in the shooting. The investigation into the murder is still ongoing according to Carrollton Police.

Police stated Monday there’s no evidence of any link between Sigman and Jones, who was shot twice according to the New York Post.

“There was no interaction between him and the girls before this happened,” Carrollton police Sgt. Meredith Browning told the media outlet.

Jones recently graduated from Mount Zion High School which posted a message concerning the tragic news.

“It is with great sadness that we write to inform you of the passing of Anna Jones, a recent Class of 2022 graduate of MZHS,” the school stated on Facebook. “Anna loved this school and this community and she will be missed dearly by many. Please keep her family and friends in your thoughts and prayers as they go through this difficult time.”

One friend told CBS 46 that Jones was a “beautiful, sweet, caring girl.”

“I will miss her forever,” Jones’ friend Ethan Lepard sadly commented. “There are so many good qualities, no one could list them all.”

The former professor is staring down the barrel of charges including three counts of aggravated assault, three counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and one count of murder. He remains in custody and is set to make his first appearance in court Monday afternoon.

The University of West Georgia immediately announced via an email that Sigman, 47, had been terminated by the school after getting wind of his arrest.

“UWG has terminated the employment of Richard Sigman and continues to work with the city of Carrollton Police Department, which leads this ongoing investigation,” the university announced, according to Fox5 Atlanta. “On behalf of the university, we wish to convey our deepest condolences to Anna’s family and many friends.”

The school is also providing counseling for students and staff in the wake of the shooting.
