The New York Police Department has decided to ban romantic relationships between bosses and their subordinates in the wake of a lap dance scandal last year where a rookie cop gave a married male lieutenant a lap dance during a raunchy holiday party.
A new policy has been put in place and made official in the NYPD’s Patrol Guide for officers. No more dating between supervisors and staff will be tolerated, according to the New York Post.
Per the new regulations, if there is an affair between a supervisor and a subordinate, it will result in the transfer of “one of the involved parties” and officers should notify the NYPD of the romantic engagement.
“Members of the service are strongly encouraged to make a notification requesting a transfer in order to avoid workplace disruption,” the new rules advise.
According to an unnamed high-ranking source in the NYPD, the policy went into force on April 4 and was not connected to any specific incident.
“No connection to anything but standard practice in most professional environments and overdue here,” the source remarked to the New York Post.
However, the media outlet also broke a story in December that showed a video where a Bronx rookie cop gave a lieutenant named Nick McGarry a lap dance at Rory Dolan’s bar in Yonkers. The rookie named Vera Mekuli would later go on to publicly apologize to the officer’s wife for the sexual display.

“It was supposed to be for fun, sh*t and giggles,” she said. “I feel like I’ve completely ruined, I guess, his picture as a lieutenant, as a boss. I know it doesn’t look good on him at all. But I do apologize,” she had said.

When the brass got wind of the incident, they were reportedly furious. It is unclear what ramifications it had but unnamed sources claim the officer was transferred to the Transit Bureau following the embarrassing event. The rookie evidently skated on the incident.
In another case that definitely crossed the NYPD’s line over relationships, a sergeant is said to have impregnated a rookie cop driver while his wife was also pregnant.
Sgt. Marcy Velez, 44, of the Bronx’s 45th Precinct, reportedly started the affair with his subordinate officer in 2019. She was in her early 20s at the time, fresh out of the academy, and he was in his 40s. Internal Affairs got involved concerning that one, according to the New York Post.
Taking the new policy even further, it forbids relationships between officers and “confidential informants, witnesses or victims while on or off duty” and any “youth/young adult assigned to the various programs the department operates.”
At least one police source is thrilled over the new rules and says they are long overdue.
“I think it’s great,” the source commented. “It lets the supervisors be supervisors instead of fraternizing with their underlings. Now you can’t abuse your power because that’s what they do. They abuse their power and play on the weak. Now if the allegation comes out, your ass is grass and who wants to risk their career for that?”
