Ukrainians reported on Tuesday that they had sunk a Russian warship early Monday morning local time after it attacked Snake Island, taking 13 border guards captive who, in no uncertain terms, told Putin’s forces to “Go f*** yourself!” during the standoff.

“Did we get it?” one soldier asked. “I don’t see it yet,” another soldier replied.

“Look, we got the warship,” a soldier exclaimed. “It’s on fire!”

“We f***ing hit them!” a Ukrainian soldier is overheard saying on a recording of the conflict, according to the Times of London.

Another soldier repeated the now-infamous phrase one of the border guards defiantly told the Russians after they ordered them to surrender their military outpost on Snake Island in the Black Sea on day one of the invasion.

“Russian warship, go f*** yourself!” he declared after they hit the enemy ship.

The Russian warship was reportedly hit and sunk during a volley of rockets on Monday. It is thought that the ship may have been hit by a missile that was fired by land-based Ukrainian forces who were defending the port city of Odesa. The Ukrainian city has been bracing for an attack by Russians for days, according to the Times of London. Video shared by the Ukrainian Navy on Monday shows a nighttime rocket barrage, which soldiers described as “holiday fireworks.”

“Ship was destroyed, it is confirmed,” a Ukrainian military source told the media outlet.

The Ukrainian Navy also allegedly claimed that units defending Odesa had “struck an enemy ship”, adding: “The enemy has retreated again.”

The Valisy Bykov is a small patrol boat or warship known as a “corvette.” It was one of two ships that fired on Snake Island on Feb. 24, the Janes military intelligence group reported.

An audio clip originally captured one of the 13 border guards addressing the Russians when they were told to abandon the island or die.

“This is a Russian warship,” a voice told the guards. “I propose you lay down your weapons and surrender to avoid bloodshed and unnecessary victims. Otherwise, you will be bombed.”

The Ukrainians defiantly replied, “Russian warship, go f*** yourself!”

Russian state media later showed the Ukrainian soldiers’ arrival in Sevastopol, Crimea, where they are reportedly being held. They were originally thought to have been killed but Ukraine’s Navy later revealed that the group had instead been “taken captive by the Russian invaders.”  They were captured after repelling two Russian attacks “due to the lack of ammunition,” the Ukrainian Navy said. It is unknown if they are actually still alive.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at the time that they would all be posthumously honored as national heroes. He proclaimed “all border guards died heroically but did not give up.”

Thousands of people have died in Ukraine since the invasion began and more than 2 million people have fled the country, according to the United Nations.
