A New York biology teacher was caught on video administering a COVID vaccination to her son’s 17-year-old friend at her home without his parents’ consent, resulting in her arrest and subsequent reassignment pending further investigation.
The video surfaced Monday and shows Laura Parker Russo, 54, prepping the unidentified teen for the Johnson & Johnson vaccination. “Never been so uncomfy in his life,” the caption on the video reads.
“There you go, at-home vaccine,” the boy says as Russo smiles in the video that was obtained by NBC New York. The vaccination was administered on New Year’s Eve at approximately 6:30 p.m.
The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is only recommended for adults, 18 and older. It was authenticated but it remains unclear how the teacher obtained it. Russo has no medical qualifications and it is under investigation.
Russo teaches at Herricks High School in New Hyde Park, New York. She was arrested in Sea Cliff and charged after the boy went home and told his mother that he had been vaccinated, according to the Nassau County Police Department. The teacher has been charged with New York State Education Law Unauthorized Practice of a Profession and is due to appear in court on Jan. 21.
“The mother had not given permission or authority to have her son injected with a COVID vaccine and called police,” a press release announced.

“The individual in question is a district employee who has been removed from the classroom and reassigned pending the outcome of the investigation,” the Nassau County School District cryptically commented.
According to Mount Sinai South Nassau’s Chair of Medicine Dr. Aaron Glatt, the non-professional injection could have had serious consequences.
“Besides being illegal, it’s just not a smart thing to do,” he told NBC in an interview. “An authorized, licensed professional should be providing vaccines to know how to give them properly to make sure if there’s a complication that can be dealt with immediately and very efficiently.”
This is not the first incidence of this type of thing happening. A number of unauthorized COVID vaccinations of minors have reportedly taken place across the nation without their parents’ consent.
In December, a Los Angeles mother named Maribel Duarte asserted that her 13-year-old son was inoculated without her permission, according to NBC. The boy has asthma.
He returned home from the Barack Obama Global Prep Academy in South Los Angeles with a vaccination card. While at the academy he had reportedly accepted the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine in exchange for pizza.

“I should have been involved,” Duarte told NBC Los Angeles in an interview. “The lady that gave him the shot and signed the paper told my son, ‘Please don’t say anything. I don’t want to get in trouble.'”
The unidentified child received two doses of the Pfizer vaccine, according to his card, on October 28 and November 18.
“It hurt to know he got a shot without my permission, without knowing and without signing any papers for him to get the shot,” Duarte remarked.
The mother has been vaccinated but did not want her son to get the jab because of his asthma. He also suffers from allergies which could have put him at greater risk of rare but potentially serious side effects.
