The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on Monday the recommended quarantine for those who have tested positive for COVID-19 has been shortened from ten days to five.

The CDC said in a statement: “Given what we currently know about COVID-19 and the Omicron variant, CDC is shortening the recommended time for isolation from 10 days for people with COVID-19 to 5 days, if asymptomatic, followed by 5 days of wearing a mask when around others.”

Dr. Anthony Fauci appeared Monday night on CNN to effectively endorse the CDC’s new guidance, and while some see the development as an early positive step to an eventual return to normalcy, liberals are losing their minds — it’s almost as of they don’t want to see the pandemic end.

Carl Bergstrom, a professor at the University of Washington whom NBC News labeled “a voice of clarity on the coronavirus,” led the charge in a series of tweets.

Overlooking the fact that getting tested is proving to be a challenge today, despite President Biden’s vow to provide millions of home tests, Bergstrom argued it was important because there is a  “broad range of infectious periods, with a non-trivial fraction going well beyond five days.”

“Meanwhile here’s Fauci with pretty much the definition of penny-wise and pound-foolish, saying we need to send people back after 5 days because we can’t afford to have people off of work,” the professor tweeted.

Oh, and there was this tweet:

Not lost on those taking issue with the change is the fact that just one week ago, Delta Air Lines chief executive asked CDC Director Rochelle Walensky to reduce quarantine guidelines for fully vaccinated individuals who experience breakthrough COVID-19 infections from 10 days to five.

CEO Ed Bastian cited the impact Omicron was having on the carrier’s workforce.

“With the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, the 10-day isolation for those who are fully vaccinated may significantly impact our workforce and operations,” Bastian said in a letter with airline medical advisors.

Just last week, the NFL shortened the return-to-play process for players who have tested positive.

“To this point, vaccinated players and coaches could return once they tested negative twice with at least 24 hours in between, as long as they had no symptoms,” the left-leaning sports network ESPN reported. “Unvaccinated players who tested positive were required to sit out 10 days. In most cases, this was a distinction without a difference. Only about 20% of vaccinated players who tested positive were able to return in less than 10 days.”

With employers struggling to maintain a sufficiently staffed workforce — in part because of vaccine mandates — Fauci told CNN’s Jim Acosta that the concern was not having so many people out at the same time.

“The reason is that with the sheer volume of new cases that we are having and that we expect to continue with Omicron, one of the things we want to be careful of is that we don’t have so many people out,” Fauci said of the CDC’s new guidelines.

That take didn’t go over too well online:
