The liberal media is dutifully doing its part to feed the panic sweeping the nation now that Omicron is the dominant variant of Covid-19 in America, even finding ways to disparage results suggesting that it’s milder than previous variants of the virus.

BBC reported that early evidence “suggests fewer people are needing hospital treatment than with other variants — with estimates ranging from a 30% to a 70% reduction,” only to follow that with this ominous warning: “But the concern remains that even if Omicron is milder, the sheer number of cases could overwhelm hospitals.”

With authorities in a growing number of Democrat-run cities taking steps backward to lock down again, even going back to mask mandates for those who’ve been fully vaccinated and have had a booster shot — none of which guarantees protection from the virus — NPR upped its game by urging Americans to up their game when it comes to masks.

“If you’re still using a cloth mask, it’s time to up your game. Experts say to block omicron, you should upgrade to an N95 or similar high-filtration mask,” the official NPR Twitter account stated, linking to an article on the issue.

“With another coronavirus variant racing across the U.S., once again health authorities are urging people to mask up indoors. Yes, you’ve heard it all before. But given how contagious omicron is, experts say, it’s seriously time to upgrade to an N95 or similar high-filtration respirator when you’re in public indoor spaces,” the article opens.

Linsey Marr, a researcher at Virginia Tech who studies how viruses transmit in the air, is then quoted warning that cloth masks “are not going to cut it with omicron.”

NPR noted that omicron “is so much more transmissible than coronavirus variants that have come before it. It spreads at least three times faster than delta. One person is infecting at least three others at a time on average, based on data from other countries.”

“It’s very contagious,” Dr. Robert Wachter, chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, said. “And the kind of encounter that you could have had with prior versions of the virus that would have left you uninfected, there’s now a good chance you will get infected from it.”

While the idea that cloth masks offer any true protection from earlier coronavirus variants may be debatable, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends fabric masks for the general public, suggesting that surgical N95 masks should be reserved for health care providers.

Either way, masking, social distancing, and vaccinations have done little to stem the tide, as COVID-19 is once again surging in the United States.

Here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter showing that people can read between the lines and understand that NPR is effectively saying what critics have said all along, which is that cloth masks offer little overall protection:
