Karol Markowicz hammers NYT and teachers union head Randi Weingarten over ‘incredible gaslighting’

An op-ed written by Michelle Goldberg of The New York Times fictionally portrayed teachers’ union head Randi Weingarten as “misunderstood” and a target of “anger at public schools” while the New York Post’s Karol Markowicz branded her the “biggest gaslighter” of 2021.

“But those who fault Weingarten for closed schools misunderstand the role she’s played over the last 20 months. Rather than championing shutdowns, she’s spent much of her energy, both in public and behind the scenes, trying to get schools open,” Goldberg wrote. “And she’s been trying, sometimes uncomfortably, to act as a mediator between desperate parents grieving their kids’ interrupted educations, and beleaguered teachers who feel like they’re being blamed for a calamity they didn’t create.”

Markowicz tweeted, “Incredible gaslighting,” in response to the piece by Goldberg.

“@rweingarten did more to keep kids out of school, and simultaneously destroy public education, than literally anyone else in America. Her PR team can place all the soft focus stories but this remains a fact,” she continued.

“The article a brave NY Times writer should write is ‘How Randi Weingarten destroyed public schools in major American cities and we all watched,'” Markowicz added. “How we left behind a generation of underprivileged children because Randi Weingarten told us to.”

Many parents are disgusted by Weingarten’s revisionist claims after the lockdowns and remote schooling that their children have been subjected to.

Weingarten didn’t want to re-open schools in 2020 despite what she claims now. She has been accused of putting union members’ needs above those of students.

The president of the American Federation of Teachers told Fox News in 2020 that schools lacked the funding for personal protective equipment to return to the classroom. Emails surfaced in February showing that her group successfully lobbied the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention to be more cautious in issuing guidelines for school openings.

A Freedom of Information Act request by Americans for Public Trust exposed a number of emails between top CDC officials and the teachers’ union just days before school opening guidelines were released in February.

The New York Post uncovered two instances where lobbying “suggestions” were used nearly word-for-word within the CDC’s guidelines.

The CDC was prepping to allow in-school instruction to begin again until the union stepped in. They then adjusted the guidelines to say, “In the event of high community-transmission results from a new variant of SARS-CoV-2, a new update of these guidelines may be necessary.”

As of this past summer, Weingarten was noncommittal on the issue and hedged her bets for all she was worth, according to Fox News. She declared we’re “going to try” to open schools fully, five days a week.

The New York Times author aggressively spun Weingarten’s view on shutdowns as a “crisis.”

“At the gathering in Ohio, Weingarten said that she saw the problems in public schools as a microcosm of the toxicity of American politics right now. “If we actually could deal with the vitriol nationally, this situation would turn around soon,” she said, adding, “This constant sense that we are alone, and battling this by ourselves, I think that’s really deflating.”

“It’s part of why the pandemic has driven so much of this country mad, and was so distinctly corrosive to public schools. Isolation is terrible for solidarity,” Goldberg wrote, giving voice to the socialist bent of Weingarten and the union.

Weingarten has pushed universal masking in schools for a long time. She sent a letter to the CDC asking for an “off-ramp” from masking.

It’s not just the pandemic that parents have a problem with concerning Weingarten either. She has previously portrayed those against Critical Race Theory such as Manhattan Institute’s Chris Rufo as believing racism “doesn’t exist.”

“You’re going to tell black people that racism doesn’t exist in this country, and you’re going to expect that somebody’s going to embrace you for that?” she critically asked, according to Fox News.
