Democrats have strengthened their political stranglehold on the Big Apple following a New York City Council vote that overwhelmingly approved the rights for non-citizens to cast their votes in local elections, a move that will likely serve as an inspiration for officials in other deep blue cities seeking to solidify their control.
On Thursday, the council voted to approve the “Our City, Our Vote” by a total of 33 to 14, bad news for residents who may have hoped that there will be better days ahead after outgoing Mayor Bill de Blasio took a wrecking ball to what used to be America’s premier city.
One of those who lamented the vote is Senator Marco Rubio, with the Florida Republican expressing his dismay in a short video that he posted to his Twitter account on Saturday writing, “I love NYC, But it’s government is run by a bunch of psychos.”

According to Rubio, “So a few days ago, the news comes out that the city of New York proudly announced that they will no longer require you to be a U.S. citizen in order to vote in their elections,” he said.
“Now look, there’s a lot of crazy stuff going on in the news these days, I mean there’s not a day that goes by that you don’t read something and say like that can’t be true, that’s gotta be satire or it’s gotta be exaggerated, unfortunately, it’s increasingly true,” he continued. “But not requiring people to be citizens in order to vote, that takes a special kind of psycho.”
He added, “That’s crazy talk, I mean that, there’s a line and that line’s been crossed a long time ago, this is way beyond the line, this is like, you know way out there at a level that I can’t even describe, and so here’s what I’m going to do about it.”
Rubio continued, “I’m gonna file a bill, in the Senate and I’m gonna pursue it as an amendment every chance I get, that basically says, if you’re a place that doesn’t require people to be U.S. citizens in order to vote, then you shouldn’t be getting U.S. citizen taxpayer money, you’re not going to get federal money and we’re going to find out who thinks this stuff is crazy and who thinks this is all normal and this is the way we should all go.”
“Because this is insanity, complete insanity,” he concluded.
On Friday, Senator Rubio announced his intention to introduce the proposed legislation.
No city which allows non-U.S. citizens to vote should receive U.S. government funds
Next week I am going to file a bill to make that the law

The New York City law, which has yet to be signed by de Blasio, will allow around 800,000 non-citizens including green card holders to have a say in municipal elections, it is not applicable to state and federal elections but with Democrats almost completely reliant on riling up certain demographic segments to accrue power, it is likely the proverbial camel’s nose under the tent.
However, not all Democrats are down with the new law.
City Council Majority Leader Laurie Cumbo opposed the bill, expressing concern that making more Latinos eligible to cast ballots could adversely effect the black vote considering the shift of their support toward former President Donald J. Trump in last year’s presidential election.
Laurie Cumbo is voting against legislation allowing non-citizens to vote in NYC because, she said, Latinos voted in greater numbers for Donald Trump in 2020. She believes it will empower Latinos at the expense of Black voters.

Cumbo who is black said, “I need to know … how are African Americans going to be impacted?” the New York Post reported, “I want to know specifically how it is going to affect African American communities.”
While it is highly likely that de Blasio will put his seal of approval on the law before he leaves office at the end of the month, it’s probably reasonably safe to anticipate forthcoming legal challenges, not to mention opposition from Republicans at the federal level including Rubio.
