CNN host Don Lemon obnoxiously grilled Sheriff Michael Bouchard on Friday demanding to know why the fugitive parents of the Michigan high school shooter, Ethan Crumbley, weren’t immediately taken into custody following the DA charging them with four counts of involuntary manslaughter.
On Friday, Lemon got in the Oakland County sheriff’s face as a manhunt was underway for the parents, insinuating that the police were at fault for not nabbing them. They were eventually found in an art studio in the basement of a building in Detroit and taken into custody without incident. They weren’t armed. They claimed to have fled because they feared for their safety after their son went on his killing spree.
Ethan Crumbley, 15, has been arrested and charged with four counts of first-degree murder. The parents were charged after prosecutors asserted that they failed to secure the gun their son allegedly used during the rampage.
“I’m being tough on you with these questions because I just don’t understand, whether the prosecutor said it or not,” remarked Lemon. “I just don’t see how a case this big and this important, all of a sudden the parents are missing.”

The Crumbleys had reportedly pulled $4,000 from an ATM which Lemon fixated on.
“Well, I’m not sure who reported the $4,000 on your network. It didn’t come from us. That aside, it’s kind of like if you’re the quarterback. And let’s call a prosecutor quarterback for the moment and you just throw the football down in the end zone without telling the receiver where to go or that it’s coming. We did not know these charges were coming,” Bouchard contended.
“I understand that, sheriff. Sheriff, I understand that. We’re trying to solve this for the victims. I just wanna – and also I’m just asking questions for the people who are…” Lemon protested.
“Hey, don’t tell me we’re solving it for the victims. Because I live here and we breathe this,” the sheriff clapped back.
“I understand. I don’t want to continue to litigate who is responsible. There is time for that,” Lemon smugly replied.
“I’m not litigating at all. All I’m saying is that process and procedure always is, inform the law enforcement before discussions of warrants being issued ever happen in the public realm,” Bouchard responded.
“I understand that. I think you’ve made that perfectly clear. That’s why I said we want to solve this and to find the…” Lemon continued.
“I agree. And we will find them,” the sheriff vowed. And they did find the parents.
According to Bouchard, his department didn’t receive any advance notice that the DA was bringing charges against the Crumbleys. The police chief had to find out from the media that Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald had charged them
McDonald was excoriated for making the charges against the parents public before the couple was even in custody. An Oakland County undersheriff and two lawyers representing the Crumbleys slammed the prosecutor for the publicity stunt, according to a report cited by Fox News.
“I’ve been sheriff for 21 years,” Bouchard told “NewsNation Now” in an interview, “and I’ve never had anyone have a press conference announcing charges before we had the opportunity to have somebody in custody.”
Many are questioning the legal standing of the DA in charging the parents with manslaughter in the case. It is the first time ever that parents have been charged in connection with a child committing a mass shooting like this.
Former assistant U.S. attorney Andy McCarthy aired his opinion on Fox News with host Neil Cavuto Friday.
“So at a time when everybody’s hot and emotions are raw prosecutors are creating a crime on the fly to attach to these parents and if you think about it doesn’t make much more sense to accuse them of complicity in murder as opposed to the reprehensible negligence that they engaged in than it makes to accuse the school officials of murder,” he said.

The parents are now in the custody of the Oakland County Sheriff’s department and are awaiting arraignment.
Many on social media wondered why Lemon was being a “jerk” and “picking a fight” with the sheriff:
Not really understanding why @donlemon is picking a fight with the sheriff. Not exactly important at this point. I’d rather hear about what’s going on, do they have any new info rather than bickering. #OxfordHigh #CrumbleyCowards

@donlemon are you drunk or stoned? Why are you being a jerk to this cop? He has no idea why? We have no idea why? I actually think you look stupid now, which you usually don’t.

Don that was your worst interview. You weren’t listening to the sheriff and just badgered him unnecessarily.
— @tinkerbell95k1 (@KTheresa95) December 4, 2021
Why don’t you have the school principal on and grill them on why they allowed the shooter to stay in school like you just grilled the sheriff?

Don Lemon: leave that damn sheriff alone. He is doing everything he can and you talking about: wouldn’t you have EYES on them? Don – this is not fucking SVU. #cnn #oakland pic.twitter.com/6GaSkc97Nh

I'm normally a big fan of @donlemon and @DonLemonTonight, but what's going on to open his show on 12/3 is brutal. Don's primary concern is pitting a sheriff against the prosecutor.
He needs to be better. #cnn #donlemon

@donlemon really disappointed in your treatment of the Oakland county sheriff right now.

You, and all of us, have the benefit of hindsight at this point. I like you D Lemon but your interview of the sheriff is amateur hour. You’re smarter than this and this isn’t fictional crime TV.

Hey Don the people need to be caught but your questioning of the Sheriff was flawed AF. Take some time to understand the logistics of a police department. The case is big but their resources are not. There was no need to watch those people if they weren’t notified about charges.

Don, stop interrogating the sheriff! Seems like the prosecutor screwed up!
