NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is not shy about exhibiting his inner social justice warrior, as seen last year when he came to the defense of the nationwide protests sparked by the death of George Floyd, writing in an L.A. Times op-ed that racism in America “is like dust in the air. It seems invisible — even if you’re choking on it — until you let the sun in. Then you see it’s everywhere.”
And this week, the former NBA great had no qualms about bashing NFL star quarterback Aaron Rodgers for threatening the lives of others when he tested positive for COVID-19 and it was learned that despite having suggested otherwise, Rodgers was not vaccinated. Abdul-Jabbar wrote on Substack: “What’s especially bothersome is that Aaron Rodgers didn’t just lie and threaten the health of those around him, he also damaged professional sports.”
Speaking of threatening lives, Abdul-Jabbar’s “misplaced priorities and selective outrage,” as characterized by Media Research Center’s NewsBusters, proved to be a nice distraction considering the former player’s son was sentenced Wednesday to 180 days in jail for stabbing his then 60-year-old white Southern California neighbor with a hunting knife in an alleged dispute over an trash can.
“Here’s a new outrage for the easily offended social justice warrior Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to go off the rails about. His son Adam Abdul-Jabbar received a ridiculously light sentence for stabbing a man to within an inch of his life,” Newsbusters’ Jay Maxson wrote.
The victim, Raymond Windsor, confronted Adam Abdul-Jabbar in June 2020 for neglecting to take in trash cans for his elderly roommate and suffered injuries to his head, back, neck and side, according to NBC News.
“Prosecutors said that Abdul-Jabbar’s actions were so severe that he fractured Windsor’s skull and that Windsor nearly died of blood loss after he collapsed outside the hospital.” the network reported, citing the Orange County District Attorney’s Office to add the younger Abdul-Jabbar “pleaded guilty to three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and a count of carrying a dirk or dagger, with sentencing enhancements for inflicting great bodily injury.”
He had faced a maximum sentence of nine years in prison after being charged in August 2020 and was offered a plea deal from Orange County Superior Court Judge Derek Johnson, which he accepted.
It’s also possible Abdul-Jabbar, 29, will not serve the sentence behind bars. Sentencing was stayed until Jan. 7 so he can apply for home confinement instead of incarceration, according to the district attorney’s office, which said probation officials will decide whether home confinement will be allowed.
Critics will be excused if they suggest that’s the result of real privilege in America, based not only on the affluence of his famous father, but also on his political views.
What’s not widely reported is that, according to a lawsuit filed by Winsor, the perp screamed: “Shut your f’**king mouth or I’m gonna stick this knife through your teeth and cut your throat out.”
“I turned, and he was on me,” Winsor said of his attacker. “I thought he was punching me, but he actually had a knife. After the fourth punch, I felt a very sharp pain and noticed blood coming out of me, and then I had one to the top of my head, and I was trying to get back to my house and he was in front of me.”
“This slap on the wrist is an absolute miscarriage of justice,” District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in statement. “This man nearly bled to death in front of the emergency room doors after being stabbed so violently over and over that his skull was fractured.”
“The Orange County District Attorney’s Office vehemently objected to this court offer of 6 months — which could potentially be served as home confinement — because we believe the complete disregard for human life over a dispute over trashcans is so egregious it warranted prison time,” he continued. “The victim, in this case, has not only suffered serious physical issues, he is suffering from the trauma of having to relive this violent attack every day he walks out into his front yard. This is nothing short of appalling.”
Abdul-Jabbar’s attorney, Shawn Holley, told NBC that the facts of the case are “disputed,” but pointed out that after violently attacking the man 30 years his senior, his client “called 911 and fully cooperated with law enforcement.”
