Instagram influencer cries over mowing the lawn; humanity gets gut-checked

Given the tyrannical pandemic lockdown that Australians have been forced to endure at the hands of their elected officials, one might understand that emotions are a bit on edge down under, but to cry over mowing grass?

In what some may see as an indictment of the work ethic of Generation Z,  a social media “influencer” is being dragged unmercifully for a post about how proud she was of herself after cutting a small plot of grass. But the real story here may be the power of a single photo, as there’s much more to the story than meets the eye.

Gold Coast influencer Olivia Mathers, 24, shared the post with her 633,000 followers on Instagram: “I’ve had tears through this process. Happy tears, because I am just so f**king proud of myself. It’s so easy to be faced with an unknown/new situation and say, ‘I can’t’.”

The post, which included a photo of the tiny yard she had apparently just gardened and mowed, was shared by Celeb Spellcheck, an account notorious for snark. The caption read: “You mowed the lawn.”

Being young, attractive and willing to showcase a tremendously fit body on social media apparently earns one the title of influencer — well, that and more than half a million followers.

As an influencer, Mathers apparently felt compelled to include some life advice for her followers.

“My advice & something I am only just learning is, give yourself more credit & challenge yourself to create the results you want in life, it every aspect. It’s damn fkn empowering,” she wrote.

Mathers also had praise for her “weapon” of a mother: “Shoutout to my weapon of a mum [for] setting the absolute best example of someone who doesn’t give up and continues to defy all odds.”

Mathers bought her first home in January, according to the Daily Mail, which noted that “it’s possible her post was referring to her feelings about being a first-time home buyer, rather than the mundane act of mowing the grass.”

A closer look at an Instagram Story shared on her account shows Mathers fully involved in a landscaping project in an overgrown yard that has had little attention. In a series of video clips, she is seen edging, trimming trees and plants in the yard, planting and removing other plants. She is also seen digging up large rocks and pushing a wheelbarrow as an older woman, presumably her mother, assists. Mathers included before and after photos of their work.

But social media users had a different take, based on a single photo and few quotes offered without context.

“My three-year-old did more yard work than this today,” one person wrote.

“Unless she was on all fours with a pair of scissors.. colour me wildly unimpressed,” wrote another.

“I refuse to believe this is not satire,” still another wrote.

Another popular social media influencer, Georgia Grace, came to Mathers defense amid all the ridicule.

“This makes me so angry. She’s obviously going through a rough patch in her life and is proud of herself for getting up and finding the motivation and doing things she hasn’t had to do on her own before,” reads the post from Grace. “First of all, she bought a f*cking house on the Gold Coast. That’s already a massive achievement. It might not being ‘moving the lawn’ that was hard for her. It was probably finding the strength to get up and get it done and she has every right to be proud of herself. PEOPLE NEED TO GET A LIFE.”

As for Mathers’ tremendously fit body, here is a photograph shared Monday in the face of all the ridicule she has endured. The post included the caption: “Those who mind don’t matter & those who matter, don’t mind.”

Somehow, one gets the feeling that Mathers is a firm believer that there’s no such thing as bad publicity!
